They are expensive , at $500, but your dealer can get you a brand new keyed tumbler in 3 days.

I had no key problems on 7 Volvos for 24 years, then had 2 tumblers in one year , one p80 and one p2

Dremel a slot for the security torx and a screwdriver works well

I really appreciate the advice. I bought the stuff I need and will have a bash at it first thing tomorrow, it's going to hit 105 later so that's not an option. I'll let you know how I go on. :)

Because I read somewhere that if it's stuck on 0, it will need a new drum. Yes the S/w will turn side to side but obviously with no engine running not far.
Before you tear things apart clean and lubricate inside the key slot. I’ve had to do this on three 150k+ mile P2 Volvos.

Important to use a dry spray and not oil based as that’ll attract more dirt and gunk up the tumblers again.

On one car I do have to still repeat this a few times a year. You can replace the lock mechanism but can be delayed with some cleaning.

Well I went out to try, sprayed the contact cleaner in to clean up the innards, and the key barely turns from 0. :? Is this one beyond saving?

I bought some, but supposed that it should still turn without it being applied yet. No?

I just went out and puffed in the powdered graphite into the key slot. Tried coaxing the key, but no luck. :|

My day is getting better and better; I've just read that if I do change the tumbler (via Volvo adding phone numbers and any other number they can think of to arrive at $500) I will still need to get it programmed so it's recognised. As the car wouldn't start anyway, how is that supposed to happen, will it have to be the main dealer who will charge another zillion bucks for a five minute job?

Sorry if it wasn’t clear…this type of dry lube may make it easier. If yet to have one not free up after a good clean and lube.

If you change the tumbler and use the old key no programming is needed

I bought a little tube from Home Depot. But I'll go and get one of the ones you recommended instead. I appreciate the help, just a bit dejected with it all.

Just went out and bought some Blaster, cleaned it out again with the contact cleaner, gave it a good spray with the Blaster, and a big fat zero. I can get about 20 degrees rotation from 0. :(

Well, eventually I managed to undo one of the security screws. Getting too hot to continue on the second.
