98 v70: looking for 200A alternator part number

Post by CIK7 »

I am pretty sure I heard a few years ago that there was a 200 amp alternator made for the 98-00 70 series. I might be mistaking that with an 01-04. Is the p2 i5 alternator compatible with the 98? Can I please get a part number for the 200A?

98 and 99 have different alternators. (100A and 120A). But I now can't recall if there is also a change in rotation due to the serpentine belt and alternator position. There may also be different mounting points and pulley. Same goes for P2 alternators.

There may be a higher output alternator, perhaps it is a police spec unit? Lots of these P80's were used in Europe by various police forces. When looking at parts lists I have seen several Police 'spec' parts listed.

What do you plan on powering? 200A is a significant output that is larger than most ones ive worked with. I think p2 goes up to 140A at most.

The 98 and p2 alternators differ on mounting schemas but in theory the internals may be enough to sustain a swap. I would not personally do that as there may be other factors in play.

What would you need the extra 100A at 12-14 volts for?

I know the P2 goes from 140-180 amps, but I was aiming at the 200 amp that i thought existed for the 98 v70. I want to buy the factory AC power inverter system out of a 2012+ ford/lincoln vehicle and install it in my 98 v70. With the additional power draw, I want to eitehr put in a stronger (more CCA) battery or add a 2nd battery.

Thoughts?

Big change in 1998 to 1999 in both mount, pulley direction, and pulley freewheel

P2 also started using variable field control so you have to be careful getting parts there

Would yall recommend either an additional battery or just one with higher crank power?

Other than the hassle of having to mount a 2nd battery somewhere (maybe in the rear in a wagon behind the rear wheel fender), a 2nd battery has the advantage of being possible to isolate from the one you use to run your car on. That way if the spare runs flat you can still get home! There used to be a special side panel for wagons that had an access panel for mounting a CD changer in the back of a wagon. It gives extra height for a battery potentially.

Lots of folk who have large sound systems have a 2nd battery for that reason.

If I was to switch to a 250A alternator and add a 2nd battery, I would run a 4 gauge wire from 2nd battery to alternator. Is it necessary to buy a larger cap alternator for a 2nd battery? I have been searching for the p80 cd changer to add to my wagon. Not kidding, my SE v70 has every option except dedicated cd changer, turbo, and AWD. Can I claim that if the foglights dont work? I still need help with that. I am going to refresh that thread.

I'd definitely run that inverter off a second battery.
Your stock alternator should be fine charging a second battery. You will need a controller that switches between batteries somehow and keeps the starter battery from draining.
