1994 850

Post by badboye46 »

Hello everyone, I have a question. Recently my 94 850 has been sluggish on accelerating, and my automatic trans seems to shift later(higher rms) as if it were shifting through a governor. This is bad enough that I am afraid to go on the expressway, I am especially concerned with it dropping off of lockup and seeing my tachometer at 3500+ rpm’s as of yet I have no codes. It idles fine, seem to run fine until it’s at operating temperature then I seem to have to move the accelerator pedal more to get power and of course the transmission drops down to a lower gear….is there a way to use the onboard diagnostics to find out what is going on?

Are you running in Winter mode assuming it is an auto trans?

When was the trans fluid last changed?

I am not running in winter mode. I have flipped the rocker switch back and fourth in effort to get the trans to shift and or lock up. I don’t do flushing on the the trans basically drain and replace at level, it was last done about 4 yrs ago.

Okay, I have some additional things to bring up about my car, last week I drove home after work during a monsoon..I’m not joking, I normally take the expressway, but at 25mph and the wiper fling back and fourth and still not being able to see.. I took the long safer way home, I however still at 25 mph hit puddles that definitely affected my speed and direction on the scary drive home, so know that after this event, I’m am thinking this is when my problems started, I’m not sure what’s going on but the car is still very sluggish and now I noticed that it won’t rev past 3700 rpm’s, I’m wondering if massive amounts of water have slammed components and dislodged/shorted/flooded etc some things under my hood? I can definitely feel that’s it not responsive as it was, and I mean the engine and not the trans so I’m inclined to think that my problems were a result of this rain storm.

Water like that can get many places. It could even got up into the ECU/TCU if you have the air pipe still in place from the radiator rear shield to the ECU/TCU box.

I hate to say it, but it probably means a laborious case of removing and spraying as many connectors as you can to try to eliminate water ingress into the connectors. Is your car a turbo or non-turbo?

With the later, I would check the bottom of the intercooler for damage or dislodged lower intercooler pipe.

Also check the connectors for things like the MAF, knock sensor (which is low on the front subframe).

I am NA, and I at least found my problem for now. I drove the car about 35 miles Monday and let me tell you it was very scary; if look at it in hindsight I never would have driven the car. I spent a lot of time cleaning all electrical connections, cleaning the throttle body, on my way home on that 35 mile(one way)I had total drivability problems the motor was just powerless, had my 4-ways on and was holding up a lot of traffic. Anyhow a short distance from home I started hearing a noise, it actually sounded like I had a brake pad that had worn down to bare metal but I was not braking! When I got home I had found that the egr hose that runs between the egr canister at the back of the head, which has a vacuum hose and fitting between the air cleaner and the egr canister (has a vacuum hose attached) had melted, it is plastic and the bottom part is melted into the same hose which runs to the air pump on the front left side of the frame rail below the front bumper/radiator support, I don’t know what this melted plastic vacuum thing is called, because I have a egr controller with relay on top of the radiator. I tried looking through FCP EURO which has a hose from the air pump but it doesn’t fit my 94 850, it fits 96 & later, it also has a controller but the picture is a box; not showing the part! And get this, the hose from the air pump is NLA discontinued! So now I have no name for the plastic vacuum “thing”, no hoses which have been exposed to such extreme heat that it crumbled in my hands. So if anyone knows what this part is, are if anyone knows a part number for the hoses between the air pump and the all metal egr canister at the left side of the head I would be grateful, I may have to enter the part numbers on eBay to try and find suitable hoses and vacuum “thing”.

Take some pictures of the parts you need on engine fir reference.

A lot of people confuse EGR with Supplememtal Air Supply or SAS

Thank you very much! I will take pictures of the parts after work today. I really hope someone has these parts available, in working condition, my other cars are rarely driven, and are not driven during winter months.

Pull the distributor cap and rotor and check to see how much water got into those.

A few drops….no ignition.

I have pulled the distributor cap, only to realize there is no module in there the module is on the coil plate; at the time I thought there is no advance or retard on my timing and that was causing my transmission to drop down a gear etc., I think what was really happening was I may have had unmetered air that was causing a sluggish response from the engine, which was caused by a leak in my plastic vacuum “thing” in the EGR tract; a vacuum operated shut off(?) valve in between the EGR valve and the air pump hose…p.s. there is a spring in the melted plastic, I am going to post pictures after work today.
