1998 S70

Post by Wskbnd536 »

So my son has a 1998 Volvo S70 with 124,816 miles. When we got it we knee that it had issues. It would start rough and when you would put it into reverse or drive it would start fluttering or stalling and when you gave it gas it would flutter flutter and then stop. Mu co-worker's father is a Certified mechanic on Volvo but he lives too far away for me to bring the car to him he said it could be the distributor cap and rotor and possibly the fuel pump relay. I also posted the issues on Reddit and I got a lot of the same feedback. I did the job myself I replaced the distributor cap, the rotor and the fuel pump relay. In the mean time my son took the battery to get tested and they said the battery was a little drained and so they charged it but when they went to test it, they said it was unstable. So the day I fixed it, I drove around the block a few times. I live uphill so I tested the car and it worked fine. The following day I tested the car again. No issues whatsoever. Now 3 days later I go to test the car. I wanted to see if the battery would lose its charge. I go to start it and it starts rough and I'm like oh no and when I went to put it in drive it did rhe same thing again. Also I heard what sounds like a squeal, popping coming from the engine. It's not a knocking sound bcuz I know what that sounds like. I wanna say it sounds like sparking. I would like to point out that when Rev it in park or neutral it will kind of start to flutter or stall but it will get out of it and Rev fine.

You’ve got too many symptoms going on there.

Get the spark plugs out and check age and condition for guidance

+ 1 with Abscate on this. There are so many possibilities, that we will have to go through the issues.

When you replaced parts, what brands did you use? These cars can be particular to what you fit, especially in the engine systems.

We might as well start with that and the sparkplug type and condition.

Check in these threads too for guidance, like the no starting process and the stage 0 sections in particular.

So I feel like you will judge me on this lol but I used Standard Motor Products. I got both the cap and the rotor from them. I found them on Amazon and it had 5 stars and a few of the comments were in reference to 98 v70 and 98 s70. So I thought if it worked for them, I don't see why it wouldn't work for me. I also thought get low to Mid grade parts to see if that's the issue and if I have to replace them in a year at least I'm not dishing out $100 for hi end parts that might still not fix the issue.

We don’t judge here, but value your time and your money. There are lots of parts available that just plain don’t work well on these cars, so we avoid them. Confounding a poor running car with marginal parts is one of those time wasters we abhore.

Pull a plug, ground it to the engine block , and look for a clean white blue spark at the plug on each cylinder

What Abscate says. Check the brand of plugs and if they have an ID let us know. If they have a single electrode, then the plug gap is 0.028". Volvo plugs for non-turbos are 3 prong do hard to check.

I should have asked, is the car a turbo or non-turbo?

No I know you guys are good. I was joking. But I did have a mechanic say that it sounds like it's rhe fuel pump. I'm gonna order it and also the wires and plugs. I'll do the plugs first and rhen go from there. I rather have the pump in hand just in case. My son starts school in 5 days and needs the car so I have no choice but to have these parts on hand. I'll go through fuses too just in case. There's no check engine lights on. There trac and abs light and service lights are on though

I decided to order plugs and wires and fuel pump. Plugs are Bosch and wires are STI. I was using fcpeuro.com so I figured I couldn't go wrong.
