2004 XC70. Turbo purchase

Good afternoon!
I went to a Volvo dealership to get an actual code readout and an answer to what was going on.
I have an oil leak towards the base of the engine and was told that it was coming from the turbo oil tube return ( by the seller.)
One of the many issues, unfortunately. When I took it to the dealership they said I needed to replace the turbo and all of my other issues would go away. (For the modest price of $2499.00.)
Cabin oil smell, intermittent power loss when accelerating, heavy engine oil leak.
My question is, are there any brands to stay away from? I see them priced from $214 to $1500. Any recommendations would be great.

You want Mitsubishi TD04L-14T, this is what came with the car. New one, not rebuilt. It costs around $1k and will run problem free another decade.

Also don't forget to remove the intercooler and wash it thoroughly. It is full of oil.

consider the dealer upcharge for the turbo, so it might be $1500, but shop labor is booked at over 6 hours due to removal of the angle gear just to gain access, so their price isn't as outrageous as it might seem. But an indie should be cheaper.

Before taking a leap either way I'd get under the car and look, or have a volvo indie assess it .
When my turbo failed the oil leaked internally producing clouds of blue smoke as it dumped oil into the cat,
After I repaired the turbo the bottom of the car was coated with oil because the drain pipe gasket was now leaking bad.
If I did it again I'd pull the angle gear and driveshaft.

Oil leaks are no reason to replace the turbo. Mitsubishi turbos are really robust and if you haven’t run it low on oil, it’s good

What do you all think of a remanufactured CHRA / turbo center section. You're using your original part, not some cheap knock-off, and the price is great assuming you pick a quality rebuilder. I sent my Audi A4 turbo to a place in the upper midwest (name??) and they were very good, answered questions, did some accurate measuring, polished a housing interior. New bearings and seals, new impellers, and it was a few hundred dollars.

I'll have to dig through old Audi files to find them, sorry.

Turbo center section or "cartridge" , I paid $185 , it was from the UK, at least 5 years ago. still runs fine far as I can tell.

I drive like the old man I am, if I was a tuner I'd maybe want something more. Those days are gone.

Theres different approaches , for a turbo just getting loose theres rebuild kits for around $70.
it all depends where you are in life.
