Turbo Intercooler pipe blew off

Post by Blacklab467 »

I understand this is a somewhat common problem as our P2's age, as the picture illustrates the metal sleeve falls out of the intercooler pipe down into the rubber coupling. As the plastic pipe gets heat cycles the hose clamp deforms the pipe while the vigilant owner continues to tighten the hose clamp, further deforming the pipe in absence of the sleeve. Eventually, as in my case, the hose blows off the pipe. I was able to harness a good used pipe from the wreckers and new hoses from FCP. The new pipe is $89.99 at FCP and is Genuine Volvo. It might not be a bad idea to check your intercooler pipe if you haven't looked at it in awhile.

If its not obvious, the metal sleeve should be down in the pipe about an inch and a half.

Good tip.

I have yet to touch an intercooler on any of my Volvos, you think digging into them is worthy preventative maintenance?

I’ve seen YouTube videos of folks flushing them with diesel or kerosene but not really sure the effort provide enough benefit? Maybe if a car is doing all short trips and collects a lot of moisture in there, most of mine can get a long trip every now and then.

I don't know how important or beneficial it would be to clean out the intercooler and associated piping, I'm thinking it may provide some incremental improvement. My car has a oily film inside the piping and hoses and almost certainly the intercooler, I recently did the PCV system and the car hoses no oil after 308,000 kms. I was more concerned with the rubber hoses on the pipe becoming deteriorated and spongy after 20 years. I would probably leave the intercooler alone unless its really wet with oil, which suggests a larger problem, take 5 minutes and make sure your intercooler pipe and hoses are good.

Does the car still drive when the pipe comes off? Im guessing the pipe comes off when you are accelerating, and usually, you are accelerating for a good reason.

Gently heat the plastic pipe with a hot air gun and press the metal insert back into place
