Fuel supply problems p0089 p0171 p0194

My 2003 V70 (227k mi) has now gone into limp mode while driving three times (in past week/ 1k miles). Twice this was with all dashboard fault lights coming on momentarily and then going off (CEL stays on). Each time, I pulled over, shut off, restarted, and the car drove as normal. There are no other symptoms except for slightly higher than expected fuel consumption on the highway (-2 mpg or so) and slightly uneven sound at idle.

It happened first last weekend on a short city drive, and earlier this week I drove 750mi (within 12h with short breaks), and it happened twice toward the end of the stretch. I checked codes on arrival and found p0089 (fuel pressure regulator 1 performance), p0171 (fuel trim system too lean bank 1), p0194 (fuel rail pressure sensor circuit).

I have read that not all P2s have a fuel rail pressure sensor, but I believe I am looking at one:

I do not know whether the fuel filter has ever been replaced. I am on the road and hoping to get the car in to a Volvo specialist in Toronto tomorrow (KWL Auto) and if possible, I will have the filter replaced as a first measure

P0089 seems to be associated with fuel pump issues, and I have been advised that a faltering fuel pump would be consistent with current age/mileage. Maybe 11+ hours of driving would also tire out/overheat the fuel pump and lead to issues at the end of a long drive..?

Any ideas of what to check out first, especially given the other two codes I'm getting? Thanks!!

i would try some maf cleaner spray.

fuel pressure test, or wait and see what the diagnosis is.

Years back I had a problem like this with my sons 2001 V70. He drove it empty a few times;-) I invested $30 in a new fuel filter and after installation the problem was solved. The codes had to be cleared if I recall it right.

You are on the right path, start with fuel filter then check fuel pressure/diagnose the fuel pump.

Got a diagnosis of a bad fuel pressure sensor. Not sure exactly how this was determined, but the mechanic said the fuel pump was all good. The shop didn't have the sensor on hand, and I had plans to keep moving, so I decided to wait to get home to replace it. Having driven it to Toronto with no issues (the CEL turned off when I started the car to drive into the service bay—ha!), I drove it another 600mi with no issues and normal operation.

KWL in Toronto seemed to be a good Volvo shop, he had a long line of P2 XC70s out front and didn't charge for diagnostics. My V70 turns out have the steel fuel tank without a replaceable fuel filter, and the mechanic said that in his experience this is usual for non-turbo P2s—I have seen some back and forth about this in past threads.

Will replace the sensor, clear the codes, and follow up here with the results.

Fuel pressure sensor $43 from ipd installed today according to:


As in the video, this was quick and easy to do in my car—some other configurations such as turbo models seem to make the bolt that holds the sensor in place more difficult to access.
There is a relevant comment from peppermint (oragex on MVS) on the youtube video: I used vaseline, as he suggested, to lubricate the o-ring, as opposed to non-petroleum grease as suggested by the video creator. The only surprise was that the Schraeder valve on the other end of the fuel rail did not seem to relieve any pressure in the rail, although about 2 oz of gasoline came out when I removed the sensor. I drove yesterday, and I wonder if a lack of residual fuel rail pressure might indicate a problem elsewhere...

Codes cleared, engine started and runs as normal, no fuel leakage, took a short drive with no codes reappearing.

Celebrating because this feels like the first real DIY motor vehicle work I have ever done. I'm a bike mechanic but have never worked on engines before, and have only done little things on my V70 like fluids, bulbs, relays... Here's to many more!
