98 v70 need sunroof part/or repair advice

Post by CIK7 »

Attached picture shows the damaged bits on the sunroof mechanism. I think when I reinstalled after doing the rust treatment, I failed to put back one of those hook/notch/guide things. I actually found the 'broken tip' in the side of the tray.

The advice I need: Do i need to buy the entire tray? Should gorilla/super glue fix that?

I guess the simple answer is you don't know until you try. IT will either work or it doesn't, so worth a try. Check if there is room either side of the repair to add a small piece of metal or even plastic strips to overlap the repair and reduce the chance of it breaking again by spreading the load. Clean the join with rubbing solution (IPA) before gluing, and roughen the surface on the sides for better adhesion if adding overlap strips.

Is that plastic or cast metal?

Metal should JB weld

Plastic needs the glue that bonds to the plastic, so you need to figure out type first

For plastics I have used JB Plastic Black for repairing my dashboard mounts over the last few years (there is now also a Tan option).

Today I checked the Gorilla glue job I did on the sunroof pieces. The top piece seems secure but the long black piece came apart while sanding the dried Gorilla bubbles. I mixed some JB MarineWeld and put a little extra on the sides, plus a small amount on the top piece. I will report back if its successful.

I forgot to mention in the OP that before realizing I could look at the track before removing it, I tried to unbolt the sunroof tray from the roof. That was a bust; someone else has attempted to remove the sunroof tray. Just like the pre-threaded welded 'anchors' for the radiator bolts, the sunroof tray has 6 of them. It seems that at least 4 of them are no longer welded down, therefore I will remove the sunroof tray somehow and put JB Weld down to reweld those 6 'anchors'.

Big update!
Part 1 of this update: I removed the sunroof tray, cleaned it, and oiled it with 75w-90 gear oil (stinky!). Sunroof service done for a while!
Part 2: I was partially wrong about the way the threads were held in. The rear two threaded welded pieces are exposed to put an adjustable wrench on. The rest are also welded to (inaccessible) inside of frame of roof. The highlight was repairing the unwelded bolt that I mentioned in my last post. I used JB Weld to glue it down just like I did with the radiator bolt I mentioned in last post. I left it to cure for more than a day, but it did not work.
Part 3: When I finally put the sunroof tray back in, that one went in about halfway before becoming difficult. Possibly JB Weld in the way. It broke away, but at this point I am happy it went in halfway. The rest of the bolts tightened fine. Sunroof tray installed, yay!
Part 4: When I was moving the sunroof platform pieces to prepare to put the glass panel on, the tip (see pic in ^OP^) easily broke away, so I chose to clean the Gorilla glue off and replace with JB Weld. I smeared a thin layer over every side of the crack so it hopefully stands up instead of breaking again. So sunroof glass not installed but should be ready Friday.
I will provide a sunroof update on or after Friday. Plus stay tuned on WDYDTYVT? on or after Friday to hopefully get a sick update on the roof with pictures! I am excited about that one!

Final update! I am bummed out. Yes I got the sunroof installed. Yes the JB weld held together the straight black plastic piece. Unfortunately, the top piece broke once again, this time with JB Weld. I have the sunroof back down into 'closed' mode so rain doesnt get in. I unplugged the switch to prevent any accidental movement. I will not be doing anymore repairs on the sunroof.

The update I was super excited to release is coming in just a couple minutes on WDYDTYVT? as I promised.

Any chance of using a fiber reinforced epoxy instead? A lot of the JBWeld I've been dealing with lately hasn't been hardening like it should.

The regular setting JB Weld plus 24 hours is a much stronger product than the 5 minute type
