thats the culprit. Yes its a very DIY job.
no need to raise the car, its easier for me to remove the engine cross brace bar.
I like to put cardboard on the engine and lie down for good access.
calculate how much you will save DIY and treat yourself to some tools.
a 12v elec ratchet makes cinchining those clamps up much easier than fiddling with a screwdriver or hand ratchet in tight spaces.
A medium stubby impact will make quick work of the big nuts and bolts on the cross bar....or at least get a breaker bar and socket set from harbor freight.
A $12 headlamp to shed light.

Both couplers are spongy and feel like they're falling apart, so I'll be glad to swap them out when the new ones arrive.
Any other advice once I've got the new couplers on? Add a quart or two for the ride to get the oil changed?

Update: Parts came yesterday, I did the install and added 6 quarts of oil since she was bone dry. Ran the engine a bit, then took a drive around the neighborhood. No lights, no bad noises, no smoke.
Took it on the highway this morning and got a couple of exits before the warning came up again, this time solidly lit. Pulled off and crawled to a service station just a town away from home and we checked the stick, still full of oil as it had been last night and this morning at home, no sign under the hood of any lost oil through the couplers. Before I said more, the mechanic said it's the O-ring or a clog in the tube, he's seen the behavior before, and I thought Great, I can have this guy drop the pan and do the work, but he said he can't get to it for at least 3-4 weeks.
I can't do this next part of the job, but I'm going to see if I can line up the longer tube (below) and have someone I know do that job. Those of you who've replaced this, is it safe to assume there are other parts that should be swapped to take advantage of the opportunity?

I know in the past there was a mechanic in the lower Westchester County area named Jack that was the local Volvo whisperer, but he's retired now I've heard, anyone know of another trusty Volvo guy?
P.S. - Many thanks again to jonesg for the diagnosis and to xHeart, I'm happy to say when I pulled the old couplers off, I found the metal sleeve poking out of the tube, a hit from the heat gun and some elbow grease got it back in place as you suggested.

Just wanted to circle back to this thread to (hopefully) wrap it up. I ordered the new pickup tube plus gaskets, o-rings, washers and the newer bolts for the pickup tube and was able to get the oil sump dropped and cleaned out and the parts swapped out. I've been driving the wagon again for a couple of days and all seems well. Thanks again for the guidance, I appreciate it.

It’s the total driver to DIY. Any major work outside of brakes, struts, and oil changes is 3-6 week backlog. Who can live without a car for 6 weeks? I ended up doing my own clutch in 2018 because of this
