My son and his fiance purchased a used 2005 S60 2.5T AWD that has about 180,000 miles. It had several codes that we read at the local auto parts store.
Volvo OEM Enhanced codes were: ECM (E000, 900B, 930B, 291D, 520B, 512B, 5130) TCM (E000)
Regular codes were: (U0002, P0700, P0600, P0700)
We cleared the codes and bought the car for a "good deal"
When we first tested the car the Dash displays were showing all 8's for the Odometer and clock areas the Info screen had some errors that I do not recall.
While driving home, about 50 miles on the freeway the Odometer and Clock displays started working about 10 -15 min into the drive home
I noticed that the Info screen would not stay on a different setting and would always want to jump back to display "Distance to empty" I could scroll through other options but it immediately sometimes, and then randomly sometimes reverted back to "Distance to empty" Seemed to me any little bump on the freeway would affect it but not sure.
Drove almost home with no check engine light or issues until about 2-3 miles after getting off the freeway I changed lanes heard a clunk and noticed that the Rev Counter and Temp guage were not working everything else seemed fine. I pulled over and shut off the car but it wouldn't start, so I tried again it started but soon shut off, and noticed a message saying immobilizer refer to owner's manual, I tried again and the car started and drove normally all gauges working except all 8's in the Odo and Clock area again but no engine lights or warning messages.
I drove about 3 more miles and then stopped someplace with the car shut off for about 5-10 min and then drove the remaining 2 miles home where the car clunked again ( limp mode ) and lost the Rev counter and temp gauge, transmission was in Limp Home Mode. I got home into my Driveway shut the car off tried to turn it on and had the same events wouldn't start then did and died then did with no issues.
I came back out several hours later and drove the car around town making several stops to run errands and had no issues for the 2 hours I was out driving around.
My son took the car that night and it immediately went to limp mode 50 feet away from my house. And has been going into limp mode now about every time they drive the car for the past two days, they have also noticed that the horn doesn't work ever. The engine light has returned but I haven't pulled the codes yet but fairly confident they will be the same ones. They have also seen messages in the info display about transmission issues and brake issues etc now.
My plan is to check out the battery that is in the car confirm it is correct and good and replace if needed. If that isn't it take it to a specialist and expect to be replacing the CEM or ECM. One thing of note is that it appears to have had a dealer installed Security System at some point and thinking this also could be the culprit, but would love to hear suggestions and direction on this, thanks!

Third party security systems in immobilizer cars are a bad idea. Removing it has to be done carefully, too.
It does sound like massive CEM or DDM issues , xmedox are probably your best bet here. Expect about $1000 budget to start and hopefully not too much more by end

Took this to my local Indy and their primary finding was that the transmission needs to be replaced. From their inspection results they sited the primary reason being the color of the fluid. With an attached image of it.
FWIW when the codes are cleared the car runs great shifts well I feel no issues with the transmission while driving it.
They pulled this list of Codes:
Check engine light on:
Engine:
5130: communication, transmission control module
520B: A/C pressure sensor
E000: Control Module communications
930B: ECU, Communication Error
291D: Fuel pump Control module
512B: Malfunction indicator lamp Communication
900B: Brake pedal sensor
439C: Fuel Tank System, Leakage
3100: Misfire, at least one cylinder
3110: Misfire Cylinder 1
3150: Misfire Cylinder 5
TRANSMISSION
E000: Control module communication, faulty communication.
ABS:
E000: Communication between control units
65H/101: no description
0150: Stop lamp switch signal outside its permitted range.
CENTRAL ELECTRONIC MODULE:
1A64: communication with AOC Control module signal missing
9C03: Antenna/ light signal missing
1A62: Communication with ECM
1A5F: communication with BCM
1F00: ECM, software faulty signal
1A61: Communication with TCM
DF17: CAN H, High speed network faulty signal
8B01: Position Lamp Signal too low
CLIMATE CONTROL MODULE:
0034: Right heater pad faulty signal
Finding:
Transmission needs replace

no, not buying that diagnosys.
ABS faults can limit gear shifting in the transmission.
I would take it to a volvo specialist indy.
The trans shifts good when the other faults are cleared, that tells you its not the trans.
ABS fault will disable cruise control and send shift limit command to trans, by design.
