2006 Volvo S60 2.5T —alternator issue

Post by DianaPrince »

Alternator dead and needs replacing—fun! Existing/dead alternator is 140 Amp but I’m seeing that a replacement 160 Amp is also available. Good thing? Bad thing?

Also—is it possible that the pulley itself has gone bad (instead of the alternator) and that’s what’s causing the dead battery?

160 Amp is fine.

Your car would likely screech if you mean the idler pulley was seized. If you mean the front part of the alternator then unlikely as it pretty well locked to the rotor.

Way to tell is use a multimeter on the positive jump post and the grounded points (frame of the car) of the car while it is on and check voltage. If its sub 12.6 then alternator is on its way out. Less than 12 then it is really dead.

Age of battery may be a factor. If the battery is fully dead then it may not hold a charge for the car to maintain its operation when idle.

pull the voltage regulator from the alternator, examine the brushes, if worn to a nub you can replace it for a lot less.

Either alternator will work fine, the replacement is a bit of a tight fit but come back for help if needed

Or use your magic lasso to do it in a jiffy....

By that age/mileage my alternator had its pulley frozen, voltage regulator dead, rear bearing dead. I replaced the bearings, pulley, voltage regulator, tested the old diodes and put them back. In a few years it died again, I replaced it with a rebuilt Bosch unit with lifetime warranty (via FCP). I'm getting too old and lazy.
