'04 V70 N/A Catalytic Convertor Replacement
Is this a job I can tackle in the driveway? Is there anything in particular to watch out for? The real problem is a tattered flex pipe. The best I would have for heat is a propane torch. I should have a grinder on hand.

Some models(like my bifuel variant) have an integrated catalytic converter in the exhaust manifold in addition to the one after the flex pipe.
If yours is like that, you cannot remove the exhaust manifold normally. You have to pull the right driveshaft out and any components below the exhaust manifold that might be in the way.
If it is the cat after the flex pipe, it should be relatively easy, as long as you can go under the car or have it on jackstands. Just spray the nuts generously with WD40 or equivalent penetrating oil.
Have a new gasket ready and be sure to use a wire brush on a power tool to grind away any rust on the flanges(both exhaust manifold and the one on the flex pipe) so they can seal better.

Take a good look at the down pipe nuts and if they don’t look like nuts, take it to shop to get it put up and cracked/grinder/burned off
This is hybrid DIY.....getting the nastiest part of the job done on a rack, then doing the easy part at home.
I’ll be harvesting the cat of Shagg but that will be a dream....exhaust nuts look like this
You won’t need that special socket for OXS, pull the cat, then use a 22mm box end in all that free space

Thanks, my O2 sensor socket walked years ago. From the look, I thought a box wrench would do.abscate wrote: ↑29 Sep 2023, 04:49 Take a good look at the down pipe nuts and if they don’t look like nuts, take it to shop to get it put up and cracked/grinder/burned off

You can cut a slot with dremel along the flange, cut off the remnants of studs and bolts, then give studs a smack and they will pop off. Flange will be reusable. I did that.
