fuel odor - any suspects?

My 96 R seems to develop a fuel odor issue when driving. From outside in the area of the fuel filler cap/ right rear door you can smell gas. I don't see anything dripping. Any known suspects? I guess fuel filler neck or surrounding tubes.

Any input is appreciated.

I had the same issue some time ago. Turned out to be the doughnut type of seal between the filler neck and the tank.
When filled, the tank would leak a little from that area, and you could see some residue on the bottom of the tank. Dropped the tank, and replaced all of the vent hoses as well as that seal. Easy job, and haven't had any issues since.
I've heard that a bad fuel cap can cause the problem, but I thought that would trip a CEL light. Not sure. But that would be a really really easy fix.

A little odd that it is while/after driving, usually the issue correlates to when the tank is full.

For the full tank issues, perhaps most common cause is at the top of the tank, the fel pump o-ring seal or more likely the vent hoses on top of the tank. In short, Sveedy's good suggestions should get you to it: pull the fuel pump cover, expect to drop the tank. When the tank is near empty it is pretty easy to \handle. Full it's a nightmare.
