99 V70 T5 cooling fan

Post by C1ph3r »

Hey guys. Replacing my radiator and some other bits and found 2 broke. “Supports” I guess you’d call it on my cooling fan. I don’t think this parts available any more from Volvo. The one on FCP says it’s for an NA car except works for the AWD turbo? I don’t understand that.

Anyway, I’d prefer not to JB weld it and replace it. Car has 180k on it and it’s such a PITA to get out I’d rather just replace it since I’m in here. Could an aftermarket SPAL fan work?

If it was mine I would stitch it together and run it, but since all P80 cooling fans are the same, head for your local pick-n-pull. Get the whole assembly, shroud and all, watch Roberts' video about modifying the fan housing to fit inside the shroud, and miles of motoring pleasure are on the horizon.
Hard to tell from the pics and description how the fan was removed from the car, but I've always had much better luck pulling the whole mess out together and then pulling the fan. Doing the mod gains over 1.5" of clearance.

Just watched the fan mod. That’s pretty slick. As for how it was removed. I actually couldn’t get it out until after I dropped the radiator. I then pulled it out the top. It was a huge PITA but I also didn’t remove the pipe that’s goes into the throttle body. Only because last time I did that was when I did the PCV refresh and from what I remembered I couldn’t get the pipe of the throttle body until after I had the intake manifold removed.

But based on feed back I think I’ll just plastiweld it back together and hope it doesn’t fail and cause the fan to become unstable.

Not all the fan shrouds are the same. Turbos have additional bypass vents in the shroud on the LHS below the upper coolant hose. I believe pre-98 may also be slightly different.

Motors however I believe are all the same.

I might have a good one of Shagg but it got crunched pretty hard, 25% chance

Replace that mount hardware with cheap stainless from lowes to make future removals painless. Remember only the top two need removal, the bottoms are slotted

Personally I would use 30 min epoxy to glue it together and run with it until a suitable easy, inexpensive replacement could be found.

Degrease, coarse sand, 97% alcohol wipe then JB or hot glue. Using a large hot glue gun I patched a large hole in the coolant overflow tank of our Odyssey. Left it leaning on the power steering belt when I started the van. Coolant flying everywhere. It's not an expansion tank so no pressure but it has held up for 6 years. Poor van, gave up on it over 6 years ago but is the most reliable and trustworthy in the fleet.

You can also make it much stronger if you use the two adjacent piece for stability and postioning before the JB or hot glue. Center the piece with a screw on both sides of the broken piece. JB or hot glue the screws also (red circles) so you don't have to tighten things down so much.

Be careful adding rotating weight. The fans are balanced. If you look at them you will find metal staples around the circumference, like balance weights on a wheel.
