Which timing belt part #? Getting different jives from FCP

Post by wheelsup »

I need to replace the timing belt on my '95 850 GLT wagon.

VIN: YV1LW5511S2084938
SERIAL: 320819 B5254S

FCP is telling me this is the only one that will fit, OEM Volvo @ $46.

I can't figure out why this one will not work:

They are adamant that it will not fit (the continental one).

Anyone know why?

There were 23 and 21 mm belts. I don't know which year and motor gots the the narrow ines. I've seen data say 21mm was upnto 93, others say till 95. Maybe Turbos got 23 from the beginning.
Verdict: get the Volvo one. Don't cheap out on the T-Belt.

I was under the impression Continental produced the belts for Volvo. I previously replaced with Continental about 10 years ago and so far so good.

The '93 belt is Volvo 271952 or Continental TB217, 143 curvilinear teeth, 1362.1mm by 21mm.

The '95 belt is Volvo 9180954 or Continental TB252, 148 modified curvilinear teeth, 1410mm by 23mm.

The '99 belt is Volvo 8627484 or Continental TB331, 142 modified curvilinear teeth, 1353mm by 23mm.

Note that Volvo 9180954, which FCP is saying you need, and Continental TB252, which FCP is saying won't fit, both are 1410x23mm! Is there some other difference?

Thanks for looking that up. I did another chat with them, they said their system just doesn't indicate it fits, but it might, which makes sense with the disparity you've brought up. Same belt, but something isn't right in their system linking them. I may roll the dice and see what happens. I ordered just a normal belt last time, it wasn't anything special, using their chart and it was fine. Unfortunately, it was so long ago it isn't in their ordering system anymore.

The Conti belts are good and I think they were OE. My comment was to rather buy the Volvo boxed one if it fits length- and widthwise rather than the cheaper but same quality Conti belt that may not fit.
