First link says 9134784 was superseded by 9171552. 2nd link says that in turn was superseded by 9171595 and fits 98-04 P80's.

I know Volvo websites can be wrong these days, but could the variance be a programming issue and not a part number issue?

A 1998 ECC controller won’t work in a 1999-2000 , in my experience

That is the issue here. What Volvo says and reality. Thanks Abscate!

After a run to the Pick-a-part for a few door lock mechanisms, I now have 2 ECC controllers. One is the 9134784 and the other is the 9171595. Both were pulled from 1998's.

How does one test that they are actually functional?

Put it in and give it a go - that’s about the best way.
And correct, 98 ECC is different than 99+

I would match part numbers. I think wizechatmgr torched an ECC controller on a bad swap once

Now you have me thinking. I have several ECC units which I have pulled over the years especially when there were 50% off sales in PnP junkyards. So far never needed one, but now I even mention it is will likely be the next failure on the 'R'. I need to check what I have and part numbers. I think there might even be a 850 ECC somewhere and I think I have the controller body for an MCC unit for a 98? Buttons went to help another MVS member as their car had broken buttons when bought.

I could see that with putting a 99+ module in a 98. Tried it and the car freaked out. However, the ECC I tried to diagnose my climate issues was a different part number (out of a part out 98 S70) and it worked fine

I was thinking about this some more as the part numbers didn't seem right to me, and then it finally dawned on me. Our ECC units north of the 49th are in Celsius not F. So our part numbers are to the US. Strangely the 2 part numbers I have are:

9171635 (sup: 9171594)

and

9171799 (sup: 9459769)

Again on the Volvo OE parts sites these are listed on fitting ALL 98-04 P80's for both part numbers??

Yeah, number differences for Canada and ROW are down to C vs F printings on the face.

I don't know what's up with the parts sites - '98 and '99+ units are totally different and incompatible with each other.
