I did not hear hissing either at pressing the brake pedal or releasing it; others riding with me pointed out often. Our daughter wouldn't drive it.

i wonder if its possible to monitor the brake vac pump duty cycle.

I disagree that this is normal, I was a warranty inspector for many years, and found that the vacuum diaphram (in the brake booster) would leak and cause the hissing sound.
