Looking at a Carfax for an XC70

Post by 454cid »

I'm looking at this XC, and I have the Carfax. What's going on here? It seems this car has had tires, alignments, tie-rods, and brakes about every 15 minutes. Is this a lemon? A greedy dealer?

That or it was driven by someone who didn't care for speed bumps, pot holes or curbs. Or it was driven offroad or something.

Those boston drivers, burning up the brakes every year.
They fell for the courtesy upsell every time it was serviced and inspected, maybe owner was clueless.
The upside is it was maintained quite well..

but is the important work listed, timing belt and pcv. ?

Wow, lots of maintenance at the Volvo dealer, that's a good thing.........although expensive! Lots of 4 wheel alignments and brake jobs, probably a greedy dealer coupled with an elderly or single female owner that was taken advantage of. Nonetheless it looks like a pretty good car on paper that you shouldn't have to do much to for awhile. I wonder also about the omission of major work; timing belt, Haldex fluid and filter change, etc. Any pictures of the car? Whats the price?

Good buy, all your motor mounts were changed in the last 4 years. I would check for rust is the biggest thing.

4 Wheel alignments may automatically be done in house when they pull brakes or remove tires. I agree probs a greedy dealer.

timing belt and pump are probs under the 120k miles service. Compare to OEM service intervals is what i would say.

Bring ramps and a scanner when you check it. Look at all the codes with the read button.

I did not see it called out specifically, just the various mileage triggered maintenance. I'll have to look for a sticker.

How much of a pain is Haldex fluid? I'm a fwd P80 guy, so the awd systems are mysteries to me.

The car is at a local auction house, but the other XC70 they had just went for $3300 with slightly less miles, but a tiny amount of visible rust, and a non-factory windshield.

I think I'm going to go look at it again today, and will get some pictures. One thing that stood out on this car I'm thinking about is that all the aluminum under the hood is corroded.

Any specific areas I should look at, on a P2? It looked rust free to me, which is why I was quite surprised to find it's spent it's life in Massachusetts.

I can't find my scanner, for some reason. I've looked for it twice now. I spent time re-organizing my garage over the summer, found it, and can't remember where it was.

Drive it on wet grass or gravel and accelerate to make sure the AWD is working, there's lots that can go wrong with this system. Servicing the Haldex is a bit of a PITA but doable. You have to remove the driveshaft and Haldex flange to get at the pump and filter to change the fluid. Make sure it works before you go to this trouble. The Pump is about $350 so you want to diagnose it's failure before you do this job, and the angle gear may have failed at this mileage, or the DEM, cost of repairing AWD can be prohibitive. Not to scare you but just see if its working first.

$4680 is on the high side at that mileage. $5K with tax.
At 202K miles its due to have the timing belt changed...along with the water pump.

I bought my v70 in Boston, no rust except the rear exh hanger was rusted away.
My AWD doesn't work, I live 500 miles north of Boston now, I stay on the asphalt and it drives fine in winter.
