1998 V70 NA fuel delivery pipe connection

Post by STLV70 »

I am having problems disconnecting the fuel delivery pipe from the fuel line on my 98 V70. I've tried from the top (through the back of the engine bay), and from underneath the car. I've cleaned the connection the best I can with freeze-off, and no luck. I'm using a 15mm wrench to hold the fuel line still, and 17mm on the flare nut on the delivery pipe. I damaged the pipe when working on the fuel rail, and have to replace it. I'm worried about rounding off the connections underneath. I'm I missing a something on how to separate these?

Can you post a picture of what you are trying to remove? My 00 V70 has a clip connector and not a threaded one at the back of the engine on the passenger side.

The flare nut is on the pipe going to the fuel rail. It's 17mm, the fuel line from the tank has a 15mm nut.

Nope. Plenty of doses of PB Blaster or Kroil or the likes (not WD-40) and give it a good soak. When you try to turn the 15mm hex on the rubber pipe end, can you see if the cone nut is turning freely on the metal pipe? If it is not it makes it mor difficult.

If you are replacing the metal pipe and the cone nut, you could cut the metal pipe off close to the cone nut and get a socket on there.

The hardest part is holding the rubber hose steady. I hate to use them, but maybe have to use a good set of vice grips to hold it long enough to break the cone nut loose.

Obviously, don't use heat!

Thanks for your help! My car is running...after nearly 2 months of being out of commission. I did the following:

1. At least half a can of Freeze-Off over a couple of days...finally soaking up excess spray in a rag, and wrapping it on the cone nut for several hours.
2. Vice grips on the nut from the rubber fuel line hose.
3. I cut the fuel delivery pipe at the cone nut, put a deep 17mm socket on it with a breaker bar and got it off.
4. cleaned the threads really well with more freeze-off and a brush, and put it all back together.

I'm new to working on cars, and this was so satisfying to finally have it running.

Well done indeed sir! Nothing like beating a stubborn connector on an old car!
