Bumper and Trim restoration 2003 XC 70

Post by Blacklab467 »

In response to the thread of the same name below, I am doing a product evaluation on the product "Solution Finish Black Plastic & Vinyl Trim Restorer". My black plastic trim is very sun faded and looks light grey or white in most areas, I've tried all the common products available at parts stores and found that most are mediocre at best and a very temporary solution, usually lasting only a few washes.
I bought this product on Amazon for $53.00 CDN, it appears to be available from several other online vendors for a similar price, it comes in a 12oz bottle and a 1 oz, I opted for the 12oz and probably only used 1 1/2 ounces of it on my whole car. I probably could have done the whole car with one ounce but I subscribe to the theory " if a little is good, then a lot is better!". I washed the car and wiped down all the trim with alcohol before I started applying the Solution.

It's important to note that the plastic on XC 70's comes in three colours: black, brown, and blue. My car although it is black actually has brown plastic. I can't say for sure if this product would be appropriate for the blue trim cars.

I used a sponge to work it into the pores of the plastic, then wiped off any excess with a microfibre cloth about 10 minutes later. The product is a semi thick liquid, not oily but more like ink or dye. It wipes off easily from painted surfaces and headlights.
The finished product below, I'm very happy with the results and feel that this product will last. It really gets into the pores of the plastic and gives good coverage. A little really does go a long way. I'll report back in a few months to evaluate the longevity of this stuff but I have a good feeling about it so far. The job took about two hours to complete.

That looks really good. It will be great to see how it lasts out one of our winters and the road salt.

I watch a Youtube channel called LegitStreetcars. The guy on there really pushes a ceramic coating product for car paint protection, but also uses it on vinyl trim. It really seems to work well, but is not cheap!

Yes A lot of these products work instantly but once time and the elements have their way with them you're starting at zero again, trust me, I've used a bunch of them.
Frustrated, I tried flat rust paint on the trim and no problems what so ever even years later.
Whatever works for you I guess.
Cheers
