Great suggestion. I have a bunch of those hybrid gloves--woven fabric impregnated with nitrile--which should do the trick.

Okay, just went to Harbor Fright to plug a few gaps in my wrench collection (needed offset metric box wrenches) so I'm pretty close to done with gathering tools. Target to start is Wednesday morning.

Any more suggestions? I think I'll also pull the transfer case as it looks like it's hard to get off while in the car. Have been watching videos on YT from Saab Master Tech, he has a playlist devoted to an '06 XC70 that includes an engine pull. He takes it out the bottom and is pretty surgical/professional in his procedure. I have to take it out the top, and since it's a wrecked car I will be a bit less precise when I remove it, but I've still learned a ton from watching his stuff.

If you struggle to remove one part, move on to another. Likely it will get easier when you come back.
Bag, box and TAG. Mark as you go. Group things from an area or system. A box of mixed screws is a future nightmare. Zip lok bags are good, not the cheap sandwich bags that may tear. Use all those Amazon boxes you have saved.
Take photos if any doubt how it will reassemble.
Taking a bit more time during disassemble to organize will pay off in assembly.
More than once I have taking apart and forgot how to assemble later.

For sure take the transmission with it. Take angle gear as well, it may have less splines damage than yours. Perhaps steering rack, too, but pay attention if any wheel was forcibly moved - these racks don't like that.

Remove the front end. Cut off downpipe. Remove all cables from the engine. Support the engine/transmission on the hoist. Unbolt right engine pad (behind passenger wheel) and cut off front and rear pads. Oh, and unbolt transmission torque rods, or "lower" and "upper" pads as they are called sometimes, and upper cross bar. You need to decide what to do with A/C compressor. If the lines were ruptured and it sat like that for a long time then the whole system is FUBAR and you can simply cut the lines.

Then engine/transmission should go up as that, slightly tilted to passenger side to avoid ABS. Which you can unbolt and move aside a bit, or cut the lines.

When the engine is in new garage - do yourself a favor and replace the rear main seal and exhaust manifold gaskets. Everything else is accessible, but especially RMS is a pain to do when the engine is in the bay.

Thanks! This is just what I'm looking for.

AC is evacuated on the donor due to accident damage, but I'll have to work carefully with that on the recipient when I remove that engine. According to Haynes it can be done without disturbing the system...we shall see.

I'm planning to take everything from the transfer case forward, which means disconnecting the propeller shaft. Is that a correct approach?

I'm a little concerned about pulling the driver's side axle as that's the side what was damaged--I thought the wheel had not been hit but it might have. Definitely enough bent metal around it to impede removal. I will pass on the steering rack on this one if it looks like it was hit.

I will likely be doing a fair amount of cutting vs. disconnecting/disassembling at the junkyard merely to clear the damage so I can remove the engine, and to expedite the process as the morning temps are in the teens here.

Good suggestion on the RMS and exhaust gaskets. What about replacing the torque converter? That was suggested elsewhere.

I'm also planning to do timing belt and water pump before installing the donor engine. Any more ideas?

The worst part will be getting that crunched front end out of the way. It’s toght getting these up and out so any metal pushed in will have to be cleared

I did that without emptying the A/C. You can see A/C condenser laying on the garage floor on one picture posted above and A/C compressor still connected to the lines on another.
