Sprayed the area with brake cleaner and pulled off the front wheel so I could get to the crank pulley nut and guess what, no crank nut, it fell off at some point.
Will have to wait to pull off the crank nut off my parts car so I can install it on this car and spin the motor to see the timing marks. I have a belt and cam/crank seals ordered but the belt is oil-soaked so I really want to see where the marks are before I pull the belt.
belt might have jumped, the missing crank nut allows the crank gear to wobble, plus the belt was oily.

Highly doubt. The pulley is for serpentine belt, not for t-belt, plus it is also held in place with 4 M10 bolts.

The t-belt may have jumped, yes.

Was able to pull the crank nut off the other (parts) car and line up the marks on this car and they all look good. Don't get why it won't start...it has fuel, spark, and it's in time. When the engine was spinning over and looking at the spark plug I was getting air coming out of the combustion chamber, of course that doesn't mean I have good compression.

Guess I could borrow a compression tester from the parts store but motivation is low working on this in the driveway.

And the thought of re-timing it after I replace the crank belt and seal with those damn VVT pullies has me questioning my love for volvos. :)

In order to start a regular car you need 3 things: air, fuel, and spark. Volvo on top of that also needs the starter not interfering with the crankshaft position sensor.

Was the oil leaking from the crankshaft seal? When I first replaced the front crankshaft seal it started leaking right away. The splines on the crankshaft easily split the seal.

If it is the front crankshaft seal then use either a funnel over the splines or wrap them with electrical tape. Whatever you choose cover it with fresh oil so the new seal slides on easy.

When I first pulled the upper cam cover off and saw some oil on the belt I wasn't sure but when I looked at the front after I removed crank pulley I'm pretty sure it's the crankshaft seal, the lower part was pretty soaked. I'm waiting on the belt and seals still but will definitely cover those splines as I install the new seal. Thanks.

Just got a notice from UPS that the new TB and seals are on the way so I pulled the belt in anticipation. I should've checked earlier but I have about 1mm axial play on the intake pulley and about 2.3mm on the exhaust one, anyone know if those are within limits?

Do you have a good PEM that you can swap?

I do but I'm not in a high-corrosion area (not that they don't fail for other reasons) but I also get pressure at the fuel rail, would it still do that with a failed PEM?
