She replaced all five coils with new Bosch. That improved engine running but didn't solve the rough idle (misfire) or low tach under 35 mph.
I didn't have her swap the spark plugs. I might order a set and the tools for her to try if it takes me too long to get in to the mechanic.

Is there some air intake system which is only active under 35 mph? Maybe that's what has failed, leaking or clogged only when active.
Dense / NA 1999 2000 cars use an idle bypass valve that comes off the snorkel and dumps idle air into the intake manifold rail. Worth inspecting all the hoses for pop offs , splits, holes, clogs...and make sure the electrical connector is firmly connected.

I have problems with that very pipe you are mentioning on the Denso NA motors. The pipe becomes a gooey mess with age and thus fragile.

Good luck! This is really frustrating when you can't be there to help!

Are you both referring to part # 9463080, shown as 4b in this fuel injector rail diagram? It's the S shaped hose from the rubber air intake hose to the end of the fuel rail. On Geronimo, that hose is very hard. It easily could have cracked when I removed it for the PCV job in the summer. I'll have my girlfriend check it carefully, maybe removing it and looking in the air valve on the intake hose.

The air valve on the intake hose, part # 1275634, appears to be discontinued. In case that has failed, is there any source for a replacement?

In my defense I am old and senile! I mis-interpreted what Abscate said. I am thinking of 850 NA's that had a rubber type connector to the throttle body. On the later NA motors it is a one piece plastic snorkel. That one is prone to cracking the plastic flange at the throttle body.

As you have been through most of the easier stuff, I am now trying to think of other issues like fuel pressure, fuel pump relay, vacuum leaks causing issues. The other thing is the ECT that may be measuring incorrectly and either telling the engine to over/under fuel.

Problems like this is trouble codes, as you know may be the effect on the engine but not the cause.

As to your question on the specific hose, it should also be checked for splits just like others. So smoke or trying the WD-40 spray around the hoses.

4 or 4b depending on the plastic manifold type

I’ve got spare air valve (7) in stock.

NLA as a Volvo part. It might be worth seeking as a DENSO part.

This morning, I was a few steps away from buying a 92k mile 2000 S70 in green from Capital Auto Auction, found by abscate. At $925 + fees, it would have cost slightly more than I've spent on parts and rental car fees for Geronimo thus far. Add in the visit to the mechanic next week and the S70 would have been cheaper. Would have been harder to resist if it were a wagon.

There's a chance the ETM is dying. It is a 2000 original with ~285k miles, no rebuild, no contactless. I'm amazed it works.

The car goes to a mechanic on Tuesday. They're one I haven't used because my Volvo specialist can't be reached and my main shop is booked three weeks out. Hopefully they can check for vacuum leaks and have some knowledge about this vintage. Worth a try. Thanks again for all of your help.
