Transmission? grinding noise when coming to a stop

Post by cvergi01 »

Hey guys,

I've got a 2000 v70 awd with an automatic transmission that is "Grinding" noise from the front passenger side at low speeds and upon coming to a stop. It kind of sounds like a metal on metal brake sound (brakes are great), but is more of a low growl and feels like ABS kicking in, or the torque converter not releasing the TC lock. There is also a (possibly related) wheel bearing sound from the same side at cruising speeds.

I bought this car about 2 months ago and immediately started fixing er up. One of the first things I replaced were the sway bar end links (IDP) and subframe bushings. I do not recall if the noise was there before or not, but have checked my work and all is tight, and nothing is rubbing.

I've been a tech, and checked the brakes, and the they are fine. Please don't ask about the brakes.

Sounds like a wheel bearing gone bad to me. Simple enough to check

The classic FWB check is to swerve side to side, faster than a politician after winning a primary, to see if the noise is load dependent. If you swerve left and the noise worsens, its the Right FWB and vice versa.

My OEM FWB lasted about 150k and 170k respectively in the GWN

tried the side to side, no difference, tried putting it into neutral while at cruising speed, no difference. just checked the wheel play and there is no play up and down and acceptable side to side motion. When i spin the wheel by hand, no noise. I'm thinking its coming out of the tranny because of the sound when coming to a stop. do these cars just have some road noise? this is my first Volvo. I love it.

I know you said don't mention the brakes, but I had a 98 V70XC that had an issue of groaning when coming to a stop at the front end. It was an interaction between the rake rotors and the pads. Changed back to OE and issue went away. Also heard issue may be caused by wear ridges on the discs.

Passenger side axle? Are the boots in good condition?

The transmission is on the driver's side, so any noise from the passenger side can not be the tranny. Brakes, hub bearing or axle

Is the dust shield for the brakes rubbing on the rotor? I've had this problem, volvo didn't give much room between the too.

checked the dust plate, got the rotors turned to get rid of the lip, nothing yet. I've ordered the wheel bearings, I'll let ya know! fingers crossed.

Busted angle gear? prop shaft rubbing against metal on interior of housing? Kind of sounds my V70 AWD when I lost the AWD.
