2001 S40 Turbo - Dash light flicker, car wont start

Post by mgarrison79 »

Hi, I have a 2001 S40 Turbo that wont start. Over the last several weeks to a couple months, it would drive fine and periodically it wouldnt start. I would just take out the key and try again and everything was good. Well I try to start it to go to work and this happens:

In ACC mode, all the lights slowly come on, then they begin to flicker and a clicking noise comes from the fuse box. I've looked at the fuses and they all seem fine. Neither the headlights nor the radio will come on. The turn signals can be turned on and the windows can be raised and lowered. The door locks wont work though unless the key is not in the ACC mode.

When I turn the key to ignition, the clicking noise from the fuse box stops but I hear it in the dash. And of course the car doesnt start.

Also, I know the obvious culprit could be a dead battery, it just seems like with the clicking in the fuse box and flickering lights that its not the battery, though I suppose this could be how volvo handles dead batteries.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Matt

Sounds like a weak battery to me...although it could be corrosion on the battery wires and/or grounds or it could be the ignition switch. Get your battery checked out as well as your wires first...these are cheaper. The battery should show more than 12V on start-up cranking...maybe even 14V.
