1999 S70 T5, ordered Sachs rear shocks and mount from rockauto, neither came with washers. I removed the old shocks (original volvo) and they had a washer built into shock below the mount but nothing on top. The reason I ask is every video/walk-through seems to mention a washer or washers above and below...

As the diagram on volvo's site doesnt show a washer either above or below the mount and Sachs never included one, is one necessary? I assume Volvo wouldnt want to miss out on charging $6 for a $0.25 part if it was necessary
I did have to add one to the top to secure the mounting nut (it was easier to add on top than on the bottom) in order to get the locking nut to completely tighten, but now I'm wondering if I should have added a washer to the bottom as well. Am I over-thinking this?
rear shock replacement, no washers

When I replaced the rear shocks on my 97 855, the kit came with a new nut and washer to go over the bottom bolt.
Here are some images of the kit and the washer in place between the shock and nut:

The top nut on my kit had a flange, which I guess takes the place of a washer.
It sounds like you added a washer on top, which should be fine -- at least I can't see why it would cause a problem.
