Haldex Oil Pump Replacement

Post by XC70Rider »

The Haldex AOC oil pump finally died at 184,300 miles. I could feel the slower acceleration and hill climbing so I scanned her this afternoon and got code DEM-0006. I raised her up and applied 12V directly to the pump and got nothing.

I have changed the oil three times, replaced the filter twice, and cleaned the pump but they still don't last forever. I just ordered the Borg Warner oil pump, Volvo Haldex fluid, and Volvo AOC filter kit from FCPEURO. When the parts arrive I'll post some pictures and give results.

I replaced the CV joints on the driveshaft and installed a new AOC flange 5 years ago. Dropping the exhaust, removing the driveshaft and removing the flange, pump & filter won't be a struggle.

I do have a rebuilt kit for the oil pump. I'll try to throw on the new brushes and bearings then keep it for a backup.

Report back how long the Borg Warner lasts for and how much it costs, I had a Dorman pump that went after about 6 months, then I sprung for the Volvo one and it's been good for 5 years. I was unsuccessful with rebuilding the original pump but some have had success.

I did read your post on that Dorman pump failing in 6 months. Thanks for sharing the experience.

I'm giving the Borg Warner pump a shot because it has an identical PN as the Volvo pump and both are made in Hungary. The Borg Warner pump is also only $300 while the Volvo is $450.

>AOC Haldex Oil Pump Kit - Borg Warner 30783079 $302.99
>Volvo AOC Haldex Gear Oil 31367941 $54.99
>Volvo AOC Haldex Filter 30787687 $43.19

Including taxes the total came to $417. I'll return the Haldex oil and filter to get ~$60 refunded.

Sounds like the Borg Warner may have been the OEM for Volvo if its made in Hungary and shares the part number. IT's probably a better pump than the Dorman. Disassembly was my problem when I tried to rebuild the original pump, by the time I got it apart it was butchered and I just threw all the pieces in the garbage and gave up. If you do rebuild yours successfully take pictures and post it. Also, where did you get the rebuild kit? Part numbers?

I got the rebuild kit on ebay a few years ago.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/323454791943

The seller's name is AWD Pump Repair.

The name of the part includes the Volvo oil pump PN:

Haldex AOC Gen 1, 2, 3 precharge pump repair kit - Maxi. Fit Volvo OE 30783079

Do any of you have any info on previous maintenance of the pumps? Was it neglect or just time that did it in?

I think that routine Haldex service would preserve the life of the pump and the Haldex unit. Volvo recommends a service interval for the fluid and filter of FOUR YEARS. This corresponds to a normal mileage of 50000 miles. I'm thinking that this interval gets exceeded more often than not. In the case of my pump failure which was original 2003 with 248000 kms (154000 miles), the fluid was filthy and the pump upon disassembly was full of particulate and crud..... probably causing its failure.
It's not a pleasant job to change the filter and pump because you have to remove the propshaft and Haldex flange. You can change the filter and fluid without removing the propshaft and flange but being that the pump is on the bottom of the assembly, you'll want to remove the pump to get the dirtiest fluid on the bottom out. The filter kit DOES NOT come with a flange nut, the new pump DOES.
Doing this job when you have a weekend free would give piece of mind that your Haldex is healthy bathing in fresh clean fluid, and give good access to change the angle gear and differential fluid, and clean and relubricate the propshaft CV's.

Doesn't really matter. It runs all the time, brushes wear out. Its life span is about 10-12 years, less in cold climate (cold as in 40 below), due to rubber seal being compromised and oil flooding the electric part.

I perhaps should prepare for another pump soon. Since it's going to be #1 son's car, should I stand by with cold beer in hand and tell him which bolt to take out next? He is 11 only, but isn't it just about a time to start familiarizing with what he'll be driving and repairing in college? =)

Yep, at that age I owned a 98 S70 T5 and the boys remember that car above all others. They liked riding in the back as the seats were comfortable besides car being sporty. Teach him handling, about understeer, oversteer and swaybars as you take turns a little quicker. Best to teach them now about responsible, safe yet swift driving in case they encounter unsafe conditions or bad drivers.

Perfect age, don't start later as they will have other interest as they get older. I didn't want the boys to get dirty so started late in teaching them repairs but one did catch on so he likes his 08 C30 T5 2.0 M66. He's helped with most of the upgrades and mods. Even has a CB (his interest) for longer drives.
.
Blessings,

BKM
