car is running fine but just noticed this. -- thank you

edit -- I may as well go ahead and ask this so I have it stored. I replaced my belt years ago -- can't remember -- do you turn the tool CCW or CW to open it and how do you latch it open?
The term "belt guide" isn't very helpful, especially given "...the car is running fine...".
The pulley on the A/C compressor is the drive portion of the setup, and freewheels until the controller calls for the compressor to run. Once the electromagnet is energized, if the system is working correctly the drive pulley then starts to turn the driven hub on the A/C compressor itself.
The car seems to be in service, so I'm a bit confused about the actual situation here.

The OP said the pulley is NOT turning. It should always be turning whether engaged or not.

"belt guide" is a senior moment. pulley is what slipped my mind.

ordered the parts for this shorter belt (under 50 bucks from amazon) and now we'll see if I can get it done. replaced a serpentine belt years ago. I'm concerned about even with the tension off, getting the belt on. I'm going to have to work from top of car so hopefully can stretch it over the power steering pump. no way I can get on my hands and knees etc.to get to the crank pulley.

You need a tool to relieve the tension on the belt to get these on. They can be really tight.

There are several threads on using 3/4 pipe fittings or you can buy the ABN tool like a pro

Yeah, I bought a CTA 1071 tool on Amazon -- it's only 12" long so maybe I'll need a pipe to put on the handle also. I guess you can slip a screw or something in there to hold it open. Looks like maybe a #8 or 10 machine screw may do it?

A round nail. The tool I bought came with something that looks like a coat hanger wire with a perpendicular straight piece on one end to slot into the small hole on the rotating section and the matching hole on the fixed section once they are aligned. A round nail will do the same of the correct diameter.

Good luck!

If compressor idler pulley is not turning, the belt would squeal so loud, belt would be hot and shredded in seconds...maybe a minute.
It would probably kill the engine at idle.

That pulley is not seized.
Clutch is a different story.

You're right. The pulley wasn't seized -- I realize now a pulley can be turning and look like it's standing still. Total waste of time dealing with belts on/off and trying to bypass it. I'm on blood thinner and have bruises all up and down my arms from screwing with it. Hopefully, if that pulley ever were to start failing, you would get some advance warning and not seize up immediately?

It's a bearing...it will humble and grumble when goes bad...you will hear and feel the noise.
