760 cuts off

Post by LizaKiesling »

I have a 88 760/turbo. The car drives for 4 hours hwy and cuts off and will not start. After it sits for 20 min or so it will go for about 30 more min. I have replaced the fuel relay switch and it still did the same thing. I replaced the inner and outer fuel pumps and it still does the same thing. When cool the car will not repeat the problem. Three mechanics/dealer has not been able to solve this problem. Scott55 in Nov. seemed to have this same problem. LizaKiesling.

When the car dies have you checked for spark?
I would be looking at the ignition amplifier or the hall effects switch in the distributor.
Both of these are known problems in the 700 series

Like another posting, this is a similar description of a problem with my '88 760T Sedan & Wagon. After replacing a multitude of parts, we discovered from a VOLVO Master Tech in California that the problem was an injectio control relay.

Under the hood, right above the ABS unit, you'll see a pair of black relays. These are the culprits -- or maybe just one of them. They are cheap. Give it a try.

I did replace the ignition amplifier and the hall sensor as you suggested. The car was still having problems. I didn't break down again, but the drive wasn't really long enough to test it. I seem to go from one issue to the next. I am currently about to put on a overdrive solonoid and rear self leveling shocks (those are lots of money) I found them used. I sometimes wonder if most volvo w/ turbo problems are related to the integrity of the vacumm hoses. I do appreciate your site. Thank-you.
