Do any of you have any info on previous maintenance of the pumps? Was it neglect or just time that did it in?

As previously mentioned the tiny brushes will wear away over time. If you change the oil and filter as I did it should last ~180k miles. Mine made it to 184k miles. If you don't replace the fluid as per VIDA instructions then it won't last as long. Blacklab had dark fluid so his needed replacement at 154k miles.

Good info. I’m waiting for some warmer weather to crawl under there for filter and oil. My scant info on the previous owner is that they did regular basic maintenance but not in any detail, and generally not with Volvo parts.

XC70 has TRACS. TRACS does not allow any snowy corner RWD-like fun. And it's not possible to turn it off. Unless pulling the ABS fuse, at which point Haldex should shut off as well, as it talks to ABS for wheels speeds to sense when and how much it needs to engage the rear.

AWD cars with DSTC allow 5 one second DSTC button pushes to disable traction control, but keep AWD and ABS, they do allow some fun.

I learned how to disable traction control in Toyota Tundra about a year ago, and it is basically unstoppable in snow, unless high-centered. I can see that XC70 can be stuck much further away than it normally does, if it would allow turning TRACS off. What was the point in building a cross-country vehicle and not letting the owner to get into trouble?

It's a small fraction of what you'd get with a true RWD w/o traction control.

TRACS cuts engine power and stops wheels from having any slippage. This is the opposite of what an automobile needs to do in a deep snow, when bare tire traction, even with the most evil thread pattern, gives up.

Is the rear differential a TRAC-LOC? I do believe they are locking because I have previously made it up icy hills that 4x4 pickups couldn't handle. Right now I cannot risk driving her on these icy hills until I install the new oil pump.

Rear differential is open. You got there with no efforts because TRACS and Haldex in these Volvos are tuned to their best. They beat any and all traction controls in domestic vehicles.

Well I found out why the pump died.

Some debris must of got up there and cracked the case? That crack is on the top side of the pump so I couldn't see it until I removed the flange. After I get her up and running again I'll take the case off and inspect it further.

It does look that way. It might of got damaged when I removed the flange nut with an air impact gun. I didn't secure the flange while loosening the nut.
