on so I'm gonna shotgun this

buying new and replacing these items with Volvo parts

fuel pressure regulator
crank position sensor
fuel relay
temp sensor (replaced this but not with vovlo part)

any other parts I'm missing?

seems like a fuel related issue ...

I have all new spark/electrical stuff (plugs wires cap rotor coil)

cap and rotor are not vovlo....but they were working fine for about a year so far

any ideas?

car leaves me stalled and stranded every time I get in for a drive ....it will start back up after I crank it for about 3 mins.....annoying!

A bad cam position sensor can prevent starts and cause stalls i believe. Alsobad vacuum lines on the intake manifold (check passenger side of it) which can cause the car to stall out. A fuel pump that has gone bad will have no pressure at the regulator (had a 99 T5 do this to me the other day).

I would try a bit more diagnostics before readying the USS Parts Cannon.

If you have a code scanner then check the engine parameters at the time of the stall. I believe the 98's can store freeze frame data so see when the misfires/other codes are triggered.

Check for a broken engine air intake. The heat cycling slowly destroys these and that can lead to weird stallout behaviours. I faced this on a 98 s70 that has been sitting over the last 4 years. I think a busted one can confuse the throttle as the mass air flow data is not accurate to what is actually flowing. Those parts are still available at volvo.

What spark plugs did you put in. The older cars are very very specific about them. Had a member have issues with some E3 plugs they put in. Stick to NGK/Bosch. The manual calls for Bosch coppers i believe but i personally use NGK iridiums with no issue.

hmmmm

I have PLATINUM plugs, FR7DPP+ by BOSCH and they are for this vehicle

one thing that maybe of concern is that I have a mass air flow sensor.. I guess that's called MAF.. that I got from a junkyard about a year and a half ago.

would a MAF send all sorts of crazy signals like this? also there are times that before the engine stalls the engine will rev to 3,000 RPMs for no reason at all.

I remember somebody posting that I can unplug the MAF and run it like that and see if there's any issues. however you can't run it like this for days on end but just for a little while for testing purposes.

so maybe I will give that a try unplug the MAF tonight and see how it runs tomorrow morning on the way to work

thanks

ok, ordered a cps aka crank position sensor---- will replace this just because it was 32 bucks shipped and I am guessing it's the original

I hear it's a pain to get to and swap out....I will do a Google search! or ask Aunti YouTube if Uncle Google doesn't know .....😜

I'm gonna carry a fuel pressure gauge with me and the next time it stalls, throw that on the fuel rail and see if there is any pressure.

also....I will check for a broken engine air intake. I have the IPD cold air intake...but will also inspect the piping from the CAIN to the turbo inlet

maybe even put on my RIP kit that has been sitting in the closet!

Your guys at the shop should be able to run tests for all charging and battery health. That is the best way to diagnose. It could show bad charging, cables or earths/grounds.
