2000 V70R Front LH Tone/Reluctor ring questions

Post by scot850 »

So, some ma have seen my thread on the quantity of grease required for the LHF axle inner boot for a spare axle I had pulled from a junkyard. Idiots that had been on the car previously had dropped the sub-frame without disconnecting everything which pulled the LHF axle out of the inner cup.

I cleaned it up and had planned to re-use the boot and just replace the grease and large clip, but found there was the start of micro-cracking appearing in the boot so have now swapped the boot, grease and clips.

Fresh from the success at that end, all I had left to do was clean the other splined end, remove the rust and give it a lick of paint for protection.

Naturally, why should any job be that easy (it hasn't!!). I discovered what I thought was just dirt in the tone/reluctor ring was actually damage.
While I know that rusty/dirty/cracked rings can cause issues with the ABS, I am no expert in this area. So I have 2 questions:

1) Here is the damage - Is it bad enough to need the ring replaced? My normal anal self would consider doing that, but this is just hopefully going to sit on a shelf for a long time. What is the consensus on should the ring be replaced or just cleaned up and re-painted?

2) Looking up Volvo dealer websites, it is unclear what tone ring is correct for my car. Problem being it is a) a 2000 V70R - AWD and b) every website gets the car wrong (except IPD) that the engine is not a 2.3 liter, but the B5244T2 which is a 2.4 liter turbo and is also a 5 -speed auto trans not a 4 speed. Even using my Vin# does not seem to help.

The tone tine part number says the part is not available. It would suggest the part number is: 9466017. However looking elsewhere it would suggest this has been replaced by part #: 30735955. Anyone able to clarify? The OE part is $80 each ring which seems crazy. I have found a Canadian supplier that has an aftermarket part for $25 CDN + shipping. Has anyone used aftermarket tone rings and found them ok?

Thanks,

Neil.

Hi Neil, I'm no expert on this either. But although the damage looks pretty severe, the sensor may still be able to properly read and provide a signal. Too bad there is no easy way to try it out.

Good luck, Dirk

It really is a 50/50 shot on this. They are magnetic rings so if the top magnetic part was completely severed then you may be missing a small segment. See if the tips of the ring are still magnetic. If it is then the field should be strong enough to excite the sensor. If one of the teeth are not then it may not work.

I have only had a bad ring when the ring itself cracked and deformed. Hope it helps!

Thinking back, when i had my ring change my mechanic simply pulled an unlabeled one he had off the shelf. I know he is very well versed in the intricacies of these cars so it would lead me to believe that all these rings are the same. I dont recall it being a big job to change a ring either.

I would say if all the tips are still magnetic then you should be fine.

Aftermarket’s should be fine. Stick with a decent brand, no $1 parts

I'll check the magnetic field as Yanga suggests. For me it is not replacing it as the part is going on a shelf and may never get used. So adding a ring maybe a moot point. I may look at ordering the aftermarket one and leave it on the shelf. Fitting is not hard. Main thing is to heat the ring in an oven to get it good and hot and then fit it quickly before it shrinks. Oh, and making sure the seat is nice and clean!

Thanks guys,

Neil.
