How does one remove the CEM under the dash? 2005 XC70

Post by scottinalaska »

With just one headlight mysteriously not working with a good bulb, but no power to it and good fuses, I am suspecting the CEM. BUT, removing it from up under the driver's dash is a chore! Any tips? Thanks.

Have you tried a battery reset as mentioned here.

Thanks for the diagram, DGM. I have taken pics of the CEM and will go to the dealer asking one of the service guys how to get it out. I am just stuck! They sell one a month here, so at least i can hold one from the Parts Dept in my hand for further examination before I pull mine out!

I have finally removed the CEM and will post pictures. Sadly, I do not have the proper relays so I'll order those and post those too. There is a clip on the left fender side that must be lifted and two torx screws through the top of bracket into the CEM that can ONLY be accessed under the cowling in front of the steering wheel. Remove the wipers. Remove the cowling - the four "rivets" must have the centers punched ALL the way out to remove them, then the cowling will lift with some effort away from the windshield bottom trim and over the wiper studs. THEN, remove the wiper mechanism held on by two 10mm bolts - shift it to the driver's side to dislodge the grommet and lift it out the other direction. THEN remove the black cover found below held in place by five simple pressure clips. Finally you will see the two torx screws. This is also where you remove the two power data plugs since they can only be accessed that way. I'd advise removing the negative cable on the battery before removing any of the connections. That's all for now. Of course, there are a couple connections under the dash too. when you lift the clip on the left side, the CEM rotates pivots towards the steering wheel 20 degrees and drops straight down. Then you can access the other power data plug and power plug. I'll post more as i learn more.

Did you have to reset the car after replacing the CEM? If so, how did you do it?
