I was driving home today and noticed that the blue lighting around the A/C switch started flashing. I drove another 2 hours without problems. But, after arriving home I stopped a while and drove out again.
It was raining all day. I noticed that the wipers were running sluggish -- as if it was running from battery power and was slowly dying. It was then that the ABS light on the dash came on.
I pulled to the side and shut off engine to check belts to see if the Alternator belt was damaged or destroyed. It was fine. I returned inside the car to restart -- it was slow turning as if the battery was drained.
Left it for a few minutes, and it started again but in the condition of last. Worried, I drove it home. sometimes it started fine, but sometimes not. It's as if a bad connection is sometimes good-again, bad-again. I'm stomped.

migs-the flashing ac light usually means there's a code in the ac system. given everything else that happened, i'm guessing the battery went south and the voltage drop was first seen by the ac. pull the brush pack from the alternator. make sure the brushes are long enough. 4mm or less, replace it. the 740s from 83-88 have a big harness problem, also. turbos especially because of the heat. maybe the alt is working but it can't get to the rest of the car. make sure the smaller gauge wires on the positive post are ok. they tend to rot, too. had a car in the shop that drove up and wouldn't start after that until i repaired that stuff.
fyi, i've seen you on club4ag. i just totaled my 86 ae88 hatch. haven't been there for a while. only rwds worth driving, toys and volvos. good luck, chuck.
