135K 2001 V70XC hard starting then runs OK

Post by ron-powell »

Hello:

Our 2001 XC has just begun an odd behavior. When I turn the ignition key, it cranks right up, then immediately dies. It does that a couple of times, then will not light off at all. In the span of the next five minutes, I try cranking it a few times to no effect. Then the next time, it fires up and runs normally. No lights illuminate. I checked for codes and there was none.

The first time was a couple of days ago, the car had sat overnight in the garage, whose temp was maybe 85F. The second time was overnight outside with the lowest temp of maybe 70F.

Ron,
It seems like you posted this before. You ID'd the fuel pump regulator- that's what I suspect is the problem. You should be getting much more (about twice what you get) than 20-21 psi at the fuel rail.

MIJ:

Ozark Lee suggested I post over here because the engine, a B5244T, seems to be closer to a 2001 XC - no fuel pressure regulator. He thinks it might have a fuel pressure sensor, something that apparently came late in model year 2000 and subsequent.

He also sent me an illustration of the fuel rail and off to the side of the picture is a fuel pressure sensor, but no location for it.

I was hoping to get some ideas from 2001 and on owners.

Checked through VADIS on both a '00 and '01 model XC and find no definitive description nor location for the sensor. Sorry! I hope that someone will post information on this for you. I did find however that for later model Volvo's there was a recall on the fuel pressure sensor (recall #181) that might shed a little light on location and issues (do a "find" from your browser's "edit tab" on this long article): http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/lofivers ... 79906.html

Also, this little gizmo is listed as the fuel pressure regulator for your model year XC70:

Do you see this on or near your fuel rail anywhere?

MIJ:

Thanks for the picture and I'll look for it.

I took the car down to the local independent Volvo service guys and they replaced the immobilizer. They also timed the fuel pressure gradient after shutting the car off and said it held pressure well enough, but if the immobilizer repair didn't do it, then they would have to dig in to the pump and check valve, etc.

Thanks,
Ron

I sell aftermarket check valves ($85), no need for an entire fuel pump ($800) replacement

I suspect fuel delivery and endorse fully, JRL's check valve. He wouldn't be selling them if this wasn't at least a some-what common problem.
