2006 XC70 Grey Smoke

Post by XC70NeverAgain »

Hi everyone.
One morning I was starting my car to let it warm up. Has 140k miles. It was maybe 10 deg out, and let it idle for about 10 minutes. When I went outside to leave, there was a strong oil smoke coming from the exhaust. I got in and took off to work. Behind me was a smoke cloud I thought only possible in a cartoon or James Bond movie. It was thick and I couldn't see anything out of my rear view mirror. I shut it off and waited a couple minutes to drive it again. I could still smell the smoke but it wasn't billowing out of the exhaust anymore.

At first I thought it was the turbo, which it could still be, but hoping its not. It never smoked like that since then, but I did get a P0026 and P0027 code shortly after. So I started inspecting the motor. Oil had been seeping behind the VVT hubs, possibly the oil pump seal so I figured the PCV system was clogged. Bought the seals, PCV system, oil pan oring kit and sealant. Changed out the pcv system. The breather box was clean. All of it was clean except the elbow leading into the oil pan. That is why I bought the oring kit and sealant. Take the oil pan off and other than the elbow being clogged, the pan was in great shape. I do my oil changes every 3000 miles. A little sludge but the PCV port was clear. I'm grabbing for straws here. I noticed that the exhaust VVT hub had some axial play, so I bought a new one. It has the same amount of play so complete waste there.

I'm going to do the timing kit and seals tomorrow. Do you think that the oil pan elbow being clogged was the root problem here or do I need to keep digging?

oil makes blue smoke, it might be oil and water which would be the turbo seals.
The other common cause is valve stem seals.
but the codes allude to cam sensors, not sure how oil gets to the exh but i'd explore the codes first.

Ok, PCV system is done. Camshaft seals front and rear replaced. Timing belt/water pump replaced with a new exhaust VVT hub as well. And new VVT solenoids for intake and exhaust. Runs fine as far as I can tell. Drove it for about 20 min adding coolant as the system burped. Now the issue is the instrument cluster. This was working fine before doing this work. I checked all the connections that I had undone and can't see anything I missed. None of the gauges work except the alert dialog ie: coolant low stop safely. Then all of a sudden everything will work again. And then it won't. Any ideas where I should look? I did notice my PS reservoir has been leaking from one of the hoses on the bottom. Maybe that got to the computer wiring? IDK
