No FAN

Post by K B »

Dear experts,
I'm seeing following problem with my Volvo S70 (non-turbo) 1998 model...Here is the sequence

1. Turn on the AC and FAN.
2. Both AC and FAN work find for some times (i.e 1 hr, 1.5 hr some times even works for 2 hr...not sure).
3. Then, all the sudden, there is no AIR (I thought FAN is died) but big noise from FAN (It's like contineous Booo noise)...When I put the fan in full speed, I hear more noise.
4. So, I turn off both the FAN and AC and leave it for 1/2 hr...I thought the fan will cool down
5. Turn on the FAN and AC again after some times and it works find for another 1/2 to 1 hr (not sure). And problem starts again.
(Alos, I turn off the AC only when I hear the noise in FAN and but still no FAN!!)

Any idea how to fix this ?

Regards

It sounds to me like the blower motor is failing.

I just solved a very similar problem with my car. Fan and AC would work fin for a little while then other times would not work at all. I spent a lot of time trouble shooting to find that I had 2 problems. I found that my fan relay was getting hot and braking the connection. I replaced the relay and noticed a big improvement but it did not solve the problem. I found that the ground in the factor harness was bad. I cut the wire and ran a new 10G ground and it works great now. No more problems. I don't know if this will help you but changing the ground is a lot cheaper then a new fan motor.

First question: Manual or Electronic Climate Control?
( do you have 4 fan speeds or is it variable?)

Thanks to those reply. I really appreciate it.

It is electronic switch....

Also, I noticed that both pipes, in engine compartment, that goes to evaporator is completely frozen (It's like 2mm think of frozen ice on both metal pipes ....all the way ). I wonder what will happen when fan stop working ...Can AC build up in the pipe and me it frozen ? Or it's some thing to do with sensor / switch etc ?

Seconly, pleae explain what ground wire you replaced ?
And where is the fan relay located ?

What is the function of the sensor that located on one of the pipe, in the engine compartment, just before the pipes goes into the evaporator(in cabin) ?

If the FAN is bad, then why it's works after I let it rest for 1/2 hr ?

Many thanks.

Not sure about your fan unless it's on its way out and/or the power pack next to it is failing from heat. Usually a frozen pipe is from a leak that has (or still is) let in air, thus moisture. The water in the system would cause it to freeze. The remedy is to get yours system evacuated and refilled properly and at the same time search for your leak.....let's hope it's not the evaporator.

Based on everything you have posted your fan and the power stage are just fine. My bet is that the system has a low R-134A charge and it is freezing the evaporator. Once the evaporator has frozen up air no longer passes through it until it thaws back out. My guess is that it freezes up faster on humid days.

Normally the low pressure switch will kill the A/C system entirely before it turns the evaporator into a block of ice but your low pressure switch may be bad.

Just forward of the firewall on the A/C line there should be a switch screwed into the coolant line with a 2 prong connector plugged into it. That is the low pressure switch.
