Today I got my head back from the shop. They had to remove 0.2mm because the head was twisted.
Already ordered a new head gasket, previous one was 1.05 (2 holes), new one is 1.25mm.
A real pity I have to roughen up this shiny machined surface for the gasket.
This old head wont last forever tho due to the damage the previous owner did to the injector clamp threads.
Before vs after: milling for just 50 bucks (€) in a professional motor repair shop was a real steal!

Just because you're trash, doesn't mean you can't do great things.
It's called garbage can, not garbage can not.

Solved by high speed ( 70 mph) drumming sound on Catherine, the 2005

I’ve not taken too Many road trips but I was getting some noise in back at 70 mph, which I cured by driving at 65 mph

I checked back tires in December, and they were at 2mm tread on the inside , so I ordered new tires and just around to install. Found this…ugly.

Any idea what caused this? Broken cord causing it to rub in that one spot?

Extra points for getting 95% of tread life from this tire. Maybe aim for 90% in future.

Not exactly on the Volvo yet, but I spent last night soldering on 40 wires on a test ECM I have in order to program it with my Arduino. Note where I said test ECM. As soon I verify my code works, I will be doing the same on a bricked ECM I have in order to replace my semi-broken one on my car.

I also had to modify and replace the 5v regulator on the Arduino mega for a 3.3v regulator essentially making it 3.3v logic compatible. Luckily I did not have to cut the clock frequency and so far it seems stable.

It was supposed to be a very cut and dry programming of my spare ECM but a lapse in judgement led me down this path...all for a working VVT :(

About how I would sum this experience

Well it was been a busy few weeks. After our 2004 XC70 became unreliable, engine dying for no reason. Sometimes refusing to start and NO check engine light or errors from VIDA. I replaced the CEM for the second time. That fixed the running issues. Now the sunroof was not opening. So the next weekend I pulled out alarm siren (through front bumper and headlight) and the sunroof is now working. Lastly the drivers door master switch would not respond to anything on the drivers door (only). It could control all the other windows, locks, passenger mirror. Just not the drivers. This week after troubling shooting all the wiring harnesses and cleaning the circuit boards and connections in the switch (to no success), I found a replacement from a 2004 XC90 at a local breaker lot. Swapped it in and all is good! Now just a deep clean up and it is ready to go to my newly licensed son. 139,000 miles.

Wow, you have gone through a good few challenges with that car! I have to say is is probably typical of a 20 year old Volvo. Many, if not all owners decide to live with defects and not fix them and then pass them along to an often unsuspecting new owner. Every old Volvo we have owned has gone that way after purchase, issues start to become obvious and like you, for me they have to be fixed. Even our now 18 year old 06 XC70 which has been mostly maintained at Volvo has had some past due repairs done as we discovered the previous owner had 'declined' some of the recommended service options like the trans oil changes. Now all is up to date and since 2011 the servicing has been kept on schedule including the angle gear and Haldex. Even the 4C shocks were replaced.

I am currently working through a bunch of issues with a new young student friend and his recently acquired 06 V50 T5 manual AWD. This includes the fact it has been fitted with a later motor from an 08 C30. Still not entirely sure what was done with the ECU. It will take time but the owner wants to learn as e go along. It has helped he is finishing his first year in aeronautical engineering at university. Thankfully he has a bright and enquiring mind. One of us needs it! LoL!

In January the rusty exhaust of my S60 decided to finally develop a hole in the rear muffler. As you typically do in such cases, I ignored it :D

Unfortunately the hole didn't decrease in size and the exhaust got progressively louder. Therefore I ordered new mufflers from IMASAF and procrastinated for another month until Saturday, when I finally ripped the old exhaust out:

It went smooth so far, but one of the four bolts of the front exhaust guard (VIDA calls it "bracket") stripped. I expected the bolts close to the downpipe to strip but not one in the chassis :?
Then I decided to open the can of worms and remove the heat shield as well. It was a good and bad decision. Good in a sense that I uncovered a lot of rust, which had to be treated. And bad in a sense that I uncovered a lot of rust, which had to be treated. The spot welds of the rear heat shield came apart in the process, so I had to rivet them back together.

All the surface rust was ground down with a CSD disc and painted with Brantho Korrux 3in1 (the German equivalent to POR15 essentially).

The exhaust hangers were derusted in citric acid, neutralized with soda and then painted with Hammerite. The next time (if there is one..) I'll make new exhaust hangers from Stainless.

The installation went quite smooth and the IMASAF exhaust fits very well.

All in all the "just swap the exhaust on a Saturday" took three days and was significantly more work than expected.
If there only was a 1:1 replacement exhaust for P2 Volvos made from stainless steel (with TÜV approval)... :(
