Sane here, charging phone at the same time. For GPS, will mount the phone on the driver side center vent. It is not stable, but no can do until I find a phone mount that will work "well" with 850 old style vents.

.
Aren't most vents kind of generic with horizontal front row and vertical back row? As for stability it's two fold. First is attachment to vent then strength of magnet. The LISEN in my post have both qualities. I sometimes think I'm going to break the vent or holder while removing as the magnet is very strong.
.

The main issue with 850 vents is that it "drops down" by itself after the phone is mounted due to the weight of the phone. Phone would not be vertical. So I have to mount the phone "lower" on the mount such that bottom edge of the phone will touch the climate control panel to try to keep the phone as vertical, 90 degree, as possible.

My other cars vent's horizontal grids are fixed so that it won't drop after phone is mounted vertically.

seriously? my phone won't stay there for half a mile the way I drive. And then it's somewhere where I can't reach while driving. Back around 2000 they made these nice custom phone holders that would moint the phone next to the head unit, usually mounted on the outside of the instument cluster, wrapped in fale leather. wis I'd kept one of them.

In my Volvo's it's fine there. In my truck it'll slide off the seat forward, or slide behind me (split bench seat).

Proclipusa used to make one that attached to the right side of the centered area. It wedged itself between the dash pad and the dashboard and did not block any vents. I don't see it available anymore. I used to have one years ago. Here are some pictures i stole from Google.

I lean it on the plastic of the gauge cluster, blocking my Speedo. It’s not like I need to know how fast I’m going because there’s no way I’m speeding in my NA S70 lol

I have done that in the past for navigation. It fits rather snugly.
