S40 T5 Timing

Post by gotcha »

Need some advice please.....

Replaced head gasket 2 weeks ago, and now I can't seem to get the timing correct. Exhaust will be on the mark, and the inlet will be half a tooth out, every time. And there is no way to set half a tooth.
Even locked the cams in position on the marks, but then the cambelt can't go over the inlet sprocket, as the sprocket needs to move forward or back for the belt to fit.

Car starts and drives, but Engine light comes on, and Vida shows ECM-673C Camshaft position, exhaust - High
Also running cam adaptation on Vida, Intel Target closing should be 27 degree, and it reaches 27. But exhaust should be 26.5 degree, but only gets 18.30 degrees.

When we removed the tapped cover, my dad let the intel cam fall out, but I placed it back. Now in saying this, can it be something to do with the VVT? A cam stuck on high lobe or something lol, sorry not too sure how the Volvo VVT works.

Yes, most likely CVVT. It has to be "loaded" (or for a better term, sprung forward) every time the belt comes off. Search for CVVT here. Not sure if you'll find it here or not in this section of the forum but should be no different for our cars as it is for S60, V70's. Just cant remember if CVVT is on exhaust cam, inlet cam or both on or cars. If there are dual CVVT cams on our cars, then both of them will need to be "loaded."

For anyone coming across this problem, here is the fix.

Replace your solenoid seals, problem solved.

I spoke with a Volvo mechanic here, and he looked at the codes: ECM-673C Camshaft position, exhaust - High
And adaptation details: Intel Target closing should be 27 degree, and it reaches 27. But exhaust should be 26.5 degree, but only gets 18.30 degrees

Immediately told me it's the seals. I replaced them yesterday, and codes gone, adaptation in Vida shows on spot for each cams valve's.
Engine sounds even better now, since VVT is working properly now.

S40 T5 ,2008. Had a cylinder 3 misfire and Camshaft position error on Intake and exhaust error after running rough. Changed the sparkplugs (cylinder 3 plug smelt of petrol) but the error stayed. Changed the coil on 3 cylinder. Misfire error has gone but car still runs rough on idle and has no power and smokes slightly. I still have error ECM-674C Camshaft position ,intake high and ECM-673C, Camshaft position, exhaust. High. The car runs but smokes on acceleration and does not idle well. No power, So as per this post is it recommended to just replace seals first or both the solenoids. This seems to be my issue, Fuel consumption was through the roof.

Best and cheapest is replace those two seals. Easy job.

Hi all, After getting error ECM-673C and ECM-674C I have replaced the seals (OEM) and still gave an issue, I now have ECM-614B Camshaft control, exhaust. Faulty. Should I replace the exhaust solenoid or the CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR.
Thank You

Yes that is the solinoid acting up. But, first is your timing 100% correct? Please make sure.
Then, remove the solinoids and give them a proper cleaning inside. I will attach a simmilar post about it.
Do you have Vida?
Let me know!

Thanks Gotcha, I dont have Vida just a hand held Saab/Volvo diagnostic tool. I did clean the solenoids but not like in the post you provided. I will do that first and see what I get, Thanks for the assistance.
I am testing the solenoid but it does not make any loud clicks as the video suggested, I just makes a small movement hardly audible of visually active. I may need to take out the intake solenoid and test to so if that behaves the same.

I do think a good clean will fix it like in the video. Hope it is sorted after that.
