Had to order stuff. And while waiting i finally started pulling the oil cooler lines on my 96R. Now I have two non-funct Volvo Turbo wagons. I am waiting for RTV to arrive so I can hopefully put the R back together without too much fuss.
...time for a third Volvo turbo wagons then ?

Is the car suffering from the Leaky Line syndrome ? Lots of people here just eliminate the lines and put on the N/A 'delete' plate 1366780.
In either case a thin layer of wheel bearing grease on the o-ring should keep it in place without the risk of having RTV get someplace it shouldn't (same o-ring, 1366791).

Did some regular maintenance before my roadtrip to Italy/Switserland, fitted four new summer tyres, changed the oil and filter, new brake pads and rotors, new LPG filter, had the alignment checked. Also did the airbox mod. Car drives smooth and is more responsive to the throttle. What I noticed, though, is that my mpg dropped. Regarly, I get a mpg of around 25 mpg. For the last couple of days, at best, I get 18/19 mpg. That surprise  s me, especially with the airbox mod done. Anyone have suggestions where to look?

US or UK gallons? (3.8 or 4.5 liters/gallon) Which Volvo engine have you got and what speeds were you driving?

With an NA on the highway and 70mph/110kph I could get as much as high 30's mpg (7l/100km) on UK gallons. My parents borrowed a 98 V70XC I had and nearly managed that but my dad was a sympathetic driver in any car he drove. I expected normally around 30-32 mpg (UK gallon). My 2000 R on the other hand, I get maybe 20-21 mpg around town and shorter runs and maybe up to 28 on the highway.

I would look at the throttle body and give it a good clean, and then if you have not replaced the O2 sensors in many years they may be due a replacement.

You also use LPG which I have no experience of but I do know the mileage is noticeably lower than regular petrol. Appreciate your experiences and question is based on your regular knowledge and use of you car.

If a lot of that driving is on LPG there may be an issue with the LPG regulation.

Neil.

I want to believe that the oil cooler does something good when forcing my wagons up mountain passes or around racetracks - even though we know that the RN oil cooler was the far superior design.

This made me very sad today. Fortunately not mine, but that stupid Landrover ripped that poor S70 up beyond repair. Right fender and control arm literally ripped out of the car. It was a very well kept care of vehicle. I'd seen it around town occasionally.

Robert Spinner - posting here as rspi - is harder on his 850T5R than anybody I ever met, and he has some thoughts on the issue:

It is constantly loaded beyond reason at all times, including the rooftop carrier which is always bursting at the seams - literally. The last time I met him the bottom fell out and I had to help him wrap a strap around it to keep stuff from falling out onto the highway. (The carrier was on a recently acquired car, and the damage was final, he threw it away when he got home.)

His prime mover just turned 500,000 miles. I do not know what that is in metric. He eliminated the oil cooler lines years ago, and details his analysis and test results in the video. That car has a trailer hitch as well, and he literally hauls cars halfway across the country without
problems. He refuses to fix or replace leaking lines on any cars he works on for clients.
Obviously do as you feel best for your situation, but I have a small pile of old cooler lines out back.
