98 S70 front hood latch

Post by mar601 »

What is the deal and fix for the front hood latch? I've been dealing with this for several years. I pull the cable to open and it loosens on the passenger side but never the drivers side. I get out and tug up on the hood, pull it again and it opens. -- thanks

The hood release cable pulls on the drivers side first, and from that latch to the passengers side. Easy/maybe fix; spray lube inside both latch mechanisms. Then coat the U shaped catch piece's on the hood liberally with heavy grease. I do this as one of those general maintenance things. If that doesn't work, then I'd imagine there is an adjustment you can make at the drivers side latch.

it's weird that the passenger side pops, but the driver doesn't because the driver unlocks the passenger side after being actuated.
Maybe you have the rubber bump stop too high, or - as Sveedy suggests - clean and relube it.

+1 on checking the rubber bumper elevation.
IIRC, those latches are also height adjustable.

I have struggled with this too. Even after adjusting the latches and with plenty of lube, mine would still only pop one side. If you gently set the hood down and watch as the u shaped catches on the top settle into the latches on the body, if one catch is hitting the side of the latch, take a small hammer and bend the catch it so that it goes straight in to the latch. They bend really easy, so go pretty light on the hammer. With that and some lube, I finally got my adjusted to where it works about 90-95% of the time.

This is super common. Mine did it too. I ended up putting a furniture pad under the square rubber bump stop on the driver's side to give it a little more height. Worked like a charm and I haven't had to do the pull, lift, pull thing anymore.

I believe it was bmdubya1198 that mentioned in another post about wedging a piece of cardboard instead of the wood to open the hood.

I had to do the hammer mod on my passenger side hood loop on my 99. It had been hit in the front so it was way off.

Thanks. I had some strong adhesive backed round rubber pads for furniture legs and just put them on those bumpers. Working great.

We keep a piece of Amazon box cardboard in all our P80s to prevent the two pull quickstep. Someday, I’ll do the furniture pad fix

The cardboard gets folded once and wedged between headlight and hood, lightly.
