Hi Everyone,
So my previous wagon is currently sitting in a garage awaiting a used engine, some suspension, and little things to fix around the house. I've made a pretty big list of things to fix, but it wont be a daily and its a lot cheaper to fix this then it is to get a fast sunday car.
That being said, i have looked into the idea of putting a newer NA engine into the old wagon.
I like some aspects of the new engine, and it seems that the swap for the turbo engines was not a terrible endeavor. I have hit a dead end in terms of the non turbo engine. Theoretically it should be the exact same process, but i wanted to document my findings here.
The 98 NA engine was a B5254S which is a 2.5L engine making about 168 hp.
The newer equivalent appears to be a variant of the B5244S4 OR the B5244S. Both seem to make the same amount of power however the S4 appeared in newer models (S40/C30/V50). I believe the S4 is a different design language based on how the engine looks (different intake system) so i am eliminating it from the running.
The B5244S appeared in
2000[100] Volvo S70 badged as S70 2.4
2000[100] Volvo V70 badged as V70 2.4
2001–2009 Volvo S60 badged as S60 2.4[113]
2001–2007 Volvo V70 II badged as V70 2.4
1999–2006 Volvo S80[114] badged as S80 2.4[87][115]

However up here in Canada the S60 went turbo only in 05 and the V70 in 06.
I believe this is the best bet for the previous NA generation, but will do some more research to confirm.
I've heard good things about the newer generation engines and they may be significantly easier to find at this time. However, if it is too much trouble then i know i can source an older 850 engine at the very least for my 98.

hi i do not have much experience with the turbo models re engine swaps but in my humble opinion the early 850 engine b5252 10 valve seems the most durable and in uk atleast there not too hard to find in breakers and some are trustworthy and in terms of simplicity and more basic when repairs are needed,i take it your original engine is toast? if not there mostly the same basic design just without the complications of the turbo,140 hp is more than enough for me though and 0-60 mph is more than adequate and mine has roofbars with heavy ramps on and often 1 or 2 full rehab powerchairs a heavy duty winch etc and still pulls lovely,turbo is fun i get that but to me not worth the extra cost esp in fuel!good luck anyhow with the engine hunting,peaceyanga001 wrote: ↑01 May 2024, 22:23 Hi Everyone,

Looks like things are getting busy with school on my end again so it wont be for a while. My goal posts have shifted to just pulling the engine this summer.
I know the bottom ends on these cars are strong so I would probably do a valve stem seal job on whatever engine i end up purchasing. Good time to do the timing belt and water pump along with tensioners.
Ill update this post when i have time to compare the 333k km manual 2000 N/A i have kicking around in a field. Need to also do a leakdown on a 98 silver S70 with 325k km but seems to run smooth.
I got a generator up there, the leakdown kit, compressor, and a expansion tank with home made fittings. Just need the time to put them together!

My goodness how time flies. Will probably start to do some more research into this in the upcoming year. The interesting idea would be to scrap the body of the manual 00 s70 and completely convert the 98 na to a manual na engine. Should be less of a hassle, and pretty cheap. Will be pending leak down and compression tests.
