While I had this apart I figured I would test the pins on the large connector on top of the trans. All of the tests were in spec except pins 16 and 17. These are for the turbine speed sensor (engine speed sensor). Suppose to be 300-600 ohms. I read around 19M ohms. I tested the one on my 93 850 and it reads around 400 ohms. Is it possible it could be bad and I wouldn't know it? Volvo parts app calls part number 9496115. Mine has a blue dot label on it at the sensor end.

Just to wrap this up. The turbine speed sensor (engine speed sensor) on this year vehicle is a different part from previous years (don't know the break). The sensor has a very high resistance (19 meg ohms on mine) and is best tested with the multimeter in diode mode. Should read around 1 in one direction and infinite when probes are swapped. The Duraprene gasket worked great (thanks chrafael). I used Permatex 81180 on both sides of the gasket but probably didn't need to. Replaced the torx bolts with hex head bolts (the ones that are used on the hood hinges are the right size) and lock washers. No more leaks!

Follow up: trans sump cover leaking again, dripping off temp sensor. Checked the lowest cover bolt and it was rather easy to tighten so I snugged it up pretty good. Did the same on the 3 or 4 others that I could easily get to. If I had to do it again using the gasket I would increase the torque on the pan bolts to more like 15-20 lbs instead of 10 to compress the gasket.
