Volvo dealer parts vs reputable online suppliers: is there a price difference?

Post by AylmerQc »

Except for a new key fob, I haven't bought any new parts for either of my two my 07 XC70, relying mostly on auto recyclers parts.
I'm now looking at having to buy a pcv valve kit and some motor mounts.
Are the reputable online retailers recommended in this forum any cheaper than the dealer supplied parts?
We have one local Volvo dealership and half the time they don't answer their phone which leads to leaving a message that half the time doesn't get a reply, which then leads to having to drive to the dealer to get quotes...
So, just wondering if I'd be better off ordering online....

Good news and bad news: yes, there is a price difference. Bad news: there are all kinds of price differences.

Selecting a part number more or less at random -- Volvo 982869 -- here are the results:

$19.09 -- FCP -- https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... m14-982869
$21.32 -- IPD -- https://www.ipdusa.com/products/12050/F ... lvo-982869
$25.36 -- usparts.volvocars.com -- https://usparts.volvocars.com/p/Volvo__ ... 82869.html
$22.82 -- Volvo Cars Mission Viejo -- https://parts.volvocarsmissionviejo.com ... 82869.html
$17.61 -- Volvo Parts Webstore -- https://www.volvopartswebstore.com/prod ... 82869.html

The lowest/highest price = 69%, so sizable difference.

But if it's a big job with many parts, you might go crazy just to save say $50, and find it's easier to order at one place. Each of us is different however, and we all have different tolerances for spending time shopping around and having several packages from several sources to arrive.

I'm guessing that on small orders where shipping becomes a factor, it's probably cheaper to pay more from the part at the dealer, lets say, but save on the overall cost....

Yes. Another reason to bundle at one source.

I usually begin my part search at FCPEuro.com simply out of habit and familiarity from years of doing business with them.
Some people have complained about them, but Eeuroparts has consistently good pricing.
As for dealer parts https://www.volvopartswebstore.com/
also has consistently good pricing.

Good thread, good info.

I’ll shop around, I use FCP and Ipd, but I agree with sending in one order with one shipping quote. The 5% sales at FCP don’t do anything for me unless I happen to need something right then. If I need something badly I’m not concerned with sale prices, if I don’t need it now 5% is not incentive to stock up on something.

I just bought a bunch of random things from Ipd - oil cap o-ring, oil drain washers, a wheel stud for changing tires in the dark, interior trim bits, etc. No big ticket stuff. One USPS shipping at $10.

It can be frustrating, and your local dealer sounds like they've checked out.

You'll find that most of the online Volvo OEM parts sources ARE dealers, but with a separate online presence, like twarr12000 mentioned above -
