Phil, I am sure you know about the wire insulation crumbling problem of these years. Just find the bad insulation and splice in good wire.

I just wanted to get back and say thanks for the help
Problem Resolved!
I had replaced the park neutral switch on the shifter
My replacement had a slightly different plug so I did a nice neat splice
What I failed to note was that I’d gone and crossed up a blue with a blue with red stripe , it wasn’t an obvious error
Then when I was troubleshooting well nothing seemed bad exactly so it took a while to find , of course repairing tgat was easy
So there’s a good resolution and I don’t know what others can learn from that but it was me who caused my own fault
I can smile now because ny car starts !

Yes it’s a bit crumbly in a few spots ,
I noted a few things to fix up for general maintenance
My spare harness shows tge fault areas , mostly near tge engine itself and I’d say the engine harness plug
It rains here lots and mine lives outside , I know there were certain bad years for insulation but I’m not clear o thought around 85
I sometimes restore old radios most have cloth covered wire but some from the 30’s had all rubber and I’ve had to go replacing every single one to make one safe and work
Heat and oil are clprits so is ozone so I think wires near alternators and motors might also see problem areas due to anything constantly sparking
Sparks make ozone , like lightening
I guess the alternator has slip rings so maybe less sparks does
I don’t find many spiders near industrial motors they hate ozone too
Vibration is another destroyer
Tgat trigger wire in my alternator has some crumbled insulation I couod change it or just slip over some heat shrink the plug for the engine harness looked like a problem waiting to happen . Anything inside the car or inside the wire loom and protected seems pretty ok
I think I fixed my windshield leak and I’m going to look at tge 240 for same reason
Under tgat cowling tgat tge wipers polka through there is a plastic cover and it sheds rain from the hole that the heater sucks from
I think it shrank and so the water was running off the windshield and right into the heater motor , I rusted up a couple of them ,, there is a plastic dish there I chucked mine because that was holding water like a dish around it
The 240 is horrible to change but it’s less of a water issue where it lives
You have quite a list of cars !
My brother has some Mercedes about a 67 ? He has a 180 and I 190 I think maybe a 280 ‘ I always loved the 180 neat style and simple
If you have similar cars some is really nice for the chrome bits , maybe lights etc I don’t think any are really that restorable He’s restoring an old massy Ferguson now he had about 20 Volvos but cleaned up he offered me his Volvo wagon it’s a 16 V front wheel drive , runs good last Volvo made before ford wrecked everything
I have a lot full too so wasn’t sure if I wanted it I’d need to part with a 740 or 240 probably , I have an 85 Porsche 944 in just getting into needs everything rubber but not bad otherwise I think ..
