Yet another issue with my T5. Does anyone have a clue what can cause timing belt to run off centre? Replaced the timing belt and now it runs very close to the edge of the sprockets and it seems that the water pump pulley is the only thing that keeps it from running off. There's also a weird wobble in the belt. I've changed the timing belt several times before on this vehicle and never have I had a problem like this.
Video:
With the timing belt (Continental CT759), I also replaced:
- tensioner pulley 531 0090 10 / INA
- guide pulley 532 0317 10 / INA
- water pump P056 / HEPU with no-name gasket and OEM volvo bolts
- hydraulic tensioner BTV-005 / AISIN
In addition to that I also removed the oil pump and and cam sprockets and replaced all the gaskets and seals. Everything got torqued down according to specs.
So what could cause this? I'm gonna tear everything apart again and double check everything. Maybe the edge of the plastic piece that's attached to the engine got caught under the edge of one of the pulleys etc.

I'm not seeing it moving all that much. You didn't focus on the cam sprockets for more than a couple of seconds.

If you mean the belt is running closer to the face of the engine, it could well be some of the water pumps have been changed for their flange thickness. The 850 NA I replace the pump on last year the owner bought an Aisin pump. The flange bolts had to be replaced with shorter ones than the originals or 2 of the bolts would bottom out. I am trying to recall if on that it moved the belt in towards the engine block slightly as the flange on the inner end of the water pump pulley wheel sits slightly further in.

Not sure it’s enough to mess with, does VIDA have a spec for the belt alignment?

These engines are not timed at TDC, anyone doing that will have their engine break.
That being said I have the issue as OP, the belt on the intake sprocket runs closer to the engine, than the belt on the exhaust sprocket. I believe it also happened to me after I replaced the water pump with an INA one. However I have not noticed it having this much play as yours(maybe I didn't pay much attention). I have driven at least 1000 to 1500 miles like that and my belt has not deviated yet.

I've now tried several things to fix this issue. I started to replace components one by one and when I put back the old tensioner pulley the belt stayed almost at the center. So the tensioner pulley had definitely something to do with it. I actually removed the old, worn out pulley from the old tensioner arm and replaced it with a new pulley that I removed from the new tensioner arm because there appears to have some small differences between the old tensioner arm and the new one. Old one was made in Germany, new one is made in Slovakia.

I am actually quite pleased how the belt is almost at the center now but there is still an issue that bothers me. The belt still has little bit of play in it when the engine is running (wiggling from left to right). Check the video:
Also from a different angle:
Do you guys think this is a big issue? Should I try to track it down and fix it or should I just put the covers back on and forget about it?
I've driven the car quite a lot now, even at high speeds and under heavy boost and everything is totally fine. No other issues with the belt or the timing, the belt stays in the same position but it's the wiggling that's bothering me. It's possible that the water pump might be the cause of this.

When I did my belt, it wandered side to side a bit. I intended to pull the cover and look at it again after a few miles, but never did. It's had several thousand miles put on it now.
I too noticed my replacement tensioner wasn't identical to the original even though the brand was the same.
