I use plastic barb fittings instead of brass. The tubing I use fits in the oem plastic clamps that are in the pillar for the purpose of holding the tubing in place. If the section of tubing entering-pass the orifices' in the metal body is short enough then there should be no gravitational force leading to a kink. Of course this would depend on the material of the tubing. I have been using Vinyl - But if one would happen to have polyurethane tubing then the likelihood for kinking would even be less. More common than polyurethane, but less common than Vinyl is 'silicone' - I am not confident that silicone would be a good choice?!
In my case to all the cars I have performed this modification the issue was never "dirt" or "plugging of the channel" BUT deterioration of the lower end of the oem tubing and break-down of the rubber end.
I also splice the new tube much higher than in these videos. I keep the section going into the whole at about 2".
I recently purchase a 2011 XC70 when removing the pillar trim to do this modification I was surprise to see that Volvo (unlike a 2008 XC70 and a 2009 XC90 I previously had modified) - change not only the type of tubing used but also changed the manner the channel "exit" the car interior. In other words Volvo remedied this issue sometime between 2009 and 2011.
Lot's of choices in the hose I see. I do like the plastic barb better as it's light, won't oxidize and is inexpensive. Curious since this is my first drain mod but not clearing in the front, is my 2012 XC90 the old or new method of water channeling?
