AC delays start - is it normal?

Post by Andrew Vanis »

1998 V70 AC delays start - is it normal?

Initial condition:
AC and Recirc buttons pushed in

Start car

30? Seconds until compressor engages and AC lights in buttons come on.

System was recently evacuated and filled with 680g by me.

I'm putting this Volvo back into service after sitting for a few years. My kids mostly drove it so memory is uncertain if it always demonstrated this behavior.

I can't think of a logical reason what would cause this delay in activating the AC.

Thoughts?

Thanks

I can't think if mine has this delay. But my 03 Toyota 4Runner does that so maybe it is correct. IT could be to allow the engine to get going and reduce the load on the starter getting the engine going. If it is consistent, I wouldn't worry about it.

I only have 99s but the lights should come on immediately. Here’s a test: start car with system on AuT , then turn mode knob vertical to defrost position.

AC should kick on and ac button light immediately

We are assuming you have fully electronic climate control , or ECC. EcC has temperature numbers on the cabin settings , not just red/blue and an AUT on the mode dial because it was designed by a guy on the spectrum in Vienna

I have only dials and the two buttons Recirc and AC. I do not have numbers.

I'm still not clear what AUT stands for and maybe in my situation it may not matter..... And I still want to know because of my spectrum location :)

AUTomatic climate control designed by an AUTistic guy in AUsTria

You have Manual Climate Control, which is for cool kids. The only difference is the temperature of each side is controlled by wires that open and close the dampers that mix hot cold air, rather than electric motors
