89' 740 no overdrive after bypass

Post by Fahimhr »

Hello. I have an overdrive issue on my 89' 740 16v. I haven't had overdrive/ 4th gear since I got the car about a month ago, so I installed the overdrive bypass and oddly I only got into overdrive/ 4th gear once and only once, I've tried basically everything, I've adjusted the cable, I loosened the plate and started the car I filled up the tranny with fluid. anyone have any ideas????? Thank you

Have you checked the plastic linkage connector under the car? They can break and the linkage gets real sloppy.
Overdrive is electric control. Check fuse, switch, bad wiring and connections.
I seem to recall badly worn overdrive parts may not engage.
What is overdrive bypass?

The overdrive bypass is a plate that most people use to eliminate having to buy a new solenoid its an easy install it allows the fluid to pass through the two ports. I installed that. However my shifter linkage is pretty sloppy

IPD offers this part for the shift linkage. Read the reviews for more information.
